'ONE Curry' Club Helps Bring Clean Water to African Village

ONE Curry - December 2008It is something most Americans take for granted on a daily basis.  Clean water.  We drink it, bathe in it, and sometimes we just plain waste it.  But the harsh reality is that over a billion people on this planet do not even have access to it.  That is why the ONE Curry club made it their #1 directive to eliminate this problem, one village at a time.

For club member Peter Nhiany, this issue hits home especially hard.  Nhiany is one of the "Lost Boys of Sudan."  During his childhood, he and thousands of other displaced and/or orphaned Sudanese children were forced to leave their villages due to a violent civil war in the region, trekking hundreds of miles through the African wilderness.  Nhiany was eventually relocated to the United States and educated here.  His family was not so lucky.

On a recent visit to the African village where some family members now live, Nhiany noticed that they did not have the one thing that all humans need to live, clean drinking water.  They instead had only a muddy ditch in which to drink and bathe themselves.  Nhiany's mission was clear, build a well for his family and their village.  And the ONE Curry club was up to the task of raising the money needed to help.

Founded in 2006, ONE Curry 's mission has been to eradicate poverty and hunger throughout the world.  And its main focus has been to raise the funds needed to build a well for Nhiany's family in the village of Bor in the Sudan.

After months and months of research and fund raising, all of the club's hard work came to fruition in December, when they received a check to be sent to Water For Sudan, Inc. for over $11,000.  The amount is double what the organization expected to raise for the well project.

"I am going to be so glad to see my family finally drinking clean water," Nhiany said.  "I want to thank everyone in ONE Curry for helping."

Club founder John Abdulla, along with several ONE Curry members in attendance, presented a ceremonial check to a beaming Nhiany during the ceremony in the Hafer Academic Building.

"I am so proud to be presenting this check to Peter so that his family's village can have the benefits of clean water," Abdulla stated during the ceremony.  "It is our generation's mission to make sure that the over 1 billion people living in the world today who are without access to clean water, get the help they need."
