Milton, MA --

Curry College President Kenneth K. Quigley, Jr. hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for the College’s new Student Center project on Thursday, May 15 in the rear of the College’s Admission Building, overlooking the construction site.

The 84,000 square foot facility is being built directly behind the existing Student Center. Construction began in March 2008 and the project is estimated to be completed in 14-18 months. At the conclusion of the construction, the existing Student Center will be razed.

President Quigley addressed approximately 200 members of the Curry community who had gathered to mark this historic event. Expressing his gratitude to the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students, benefactors and donors, town officials, and the project team, he noted that goals achieved over the past decade – including strategic enrollment growth and expansion of academic programs and physical facilities – allow the College to move forward in achieving this next goal.

“All things are created twice,” remarked President Quigley. “First in the minds, hearts and ambitions of people, and then in their physical form.

“At Curry College, bricks and mortar aren’t important for the buildings themselves, but are important for what they allow to occur within them. The new Student Center will provide the gathering space for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that are so important to our students and our college in modern higher education.”

Curry College has partnered with Suffolk Construction Company and CBT Architects on the new Student Center project. In attendance at the ceremony from CBT Architects were James McBain, Principal and Senior Project Manager, and Christopher Hill, Principal and Designer. John Fish, President of Suffolk Construction Company, addressed community members, acknowledging the passion, integrity, hard work and professional core values that the project team shares.

"This facility will be the heart and soul of the campus and will serve as a symbol of this institution's bright future," remarked Mr. Fish. "We are extremely proud to be a part of that future as Curry College's partner on this important project."

Yaniv Havusha, a member of the Class of 2008, represented the student body at the ceremony and praised the College for its vision in undertaking the new student center development.

“The student center is going to be more than just a building,” remarked Mr. Havusha. “It will be a state-of-the-art venue that will allow and encourage faculty, staff and student interaction in both formal and non-formal ways that continue to foster and support the mission of Curry College.”

Features of the new Student Center will include: recreational athletic facilities including a Gymnasium and Fitness Center; general use and athletic locker rooms; athletic offices; expanded dining hall with a food court style servery offering informal and late night food service in addition to traditional dining options; student lounge with fireplace and living room atmosphere; café with coffee house atmosphere; sports café with pub style seating and flat screen TVs; game room with billiards and other amusements; quiet lounge for relaxed study; student services, SGA and student club offices and meeting areas; chapel for spiritual life programming and quiet prayer or reflection; campus Post Office and Copy and Supply Center with a full range of services; amphitheatre style, multipurpose outdoor gathering space on Westhaver Park; bookstore with expanded space for texts and general merchandise.
