On Friday, October 26, 2007, Curry College inducted four alumni into its Athletic Hall of Fame: Nicole Leckie, class of 2001; Jeffrey Manning, class of 1995; Stephen Santos, class of 2000; and Jack Silver, class of 1959. Each inductee showed excellence in athletics while attending Curry College.
Nicole Leckie, of Watertown, MA, was nominated for her contributions on the softball field and basketball court. On the hard court Nicole was a staunch defender and holds Curry records for blocked shots in a game (8), season (51) and career (71). On the softball diamond Nicole collected a number of team and conference honors while
playing in 141 career games. Nicole went from Most Improved Player in 1998 to Team MVP and Captain in 2001. In 2000 she earned the Gold Glove Award and was named Second Team All Conference. Her 2001 MVP season finished with a Curry College Female Athlete of the Year Award and a First Team All Conference Selection. While compiling a .327 career batting average Nicole collected 143 hits, 30 doubles, 68 runs and 88 runs batted in.
Jeffrey Manning, of Marlborough, MA, was nominated for his contributions to the basketball team. Jeffrey scored 1,295 points, 6th all time in Curry history. During his senior season of 1994-95 Jeff set Curry records for field goal percentage in a season (60.2%, 153/254) and field goal percentage in a career (58.2%, 546/938). Jeff was named team captain and team MVP his junior and senior seasons. In 1993-94 he was named as a First Team All Conference player and followed that up in 1994-95 as a Second Team All Conference Player and recipient of the John Havlicek Award. Jeff started 99 out of 100 games during his Curry career.
Stephen Santos, of East Taunton, MA was nominated for his contributions to the football team. By the time Steve Santos finished his career at Curry College he held nearly every major passing record. Along the way he was named All Conference in 1998, Team Offensive Player of the year in 1998 and 1999 and Team MVP in 2001. Until recently Steve held the All Time Curry record for touchdowns in a career with 45 and touchdowns in a season (12). Steve shares the record for touchdowns in a game (4), a feat he accomplished twice in his career. His leadership at Curry College resurrected our winning tradition and began the team on a path that has seen it win four straight Conference Championships.
Jack Silver, of Hyannis, MA was nominated for his contributions to the baseball team. Jack Silver had a four-year record of 33-1 at Curry College and was invited to Fenway Park to try out for the Chicago White Sox. He was also scouted by the Yankees, Phillies, Orioles, Cubs, Tigers, A's, and Senators. Even without a dominating fastball Jack had 26 strike-outs against Lowell Tech in a 13 inning game and compiled a career 16-1 K to BB ratio and 1.50 ERA during his senior season. He allowed no more than three hits in any game his sophomore year. Though injured most of junior year, Silver broke a three year Curry jinx against Lowell Tech by striking out 17 in a 5-4 win his first game back after healing from his injury. He also pitched Yarmouth (Cape League) to a championship title in 1959. Jack refused to sign with any major league team before he received his college degree and is quoted saying so in a Boston Globe article prior to his major league workouts.
The Curry College Athletic Hall of Fame was established to recognize the College's greatest athletes and those who have given extraordinary support to Curry's athletic program, bringing honor and distinction to the College. Hall of Fame members include individuals who have demonstrated exceptional athletic ability, personal integrity, high standards of sportsmanship and good character; have participated in varsity intercollegiate athletics at Curry for at least two years; or those who have made a significant contribution to the Curry athletic program.
