What types of letters should I write during my job/internship search?

There are several types of letters that you will use in your job "campaign." The most well-known of these is the cover letter(2.9.5) but there are also thank you letters, letters of acknowledgment, letters of acceptance or refusal and letters seeking information.

Reiterate your strongest selling points and summarize a few topics from the interview.

Express appreciation for their cooperation.

When you are offered an internship

Restate the position title, starting dates and compensation offered.

Express your appreciation for the offer and the company’s interest in you.

Acknowledge offer and, if interested, state dates you are available.

 

Offers of Employment

Acknowledge receipt of offer, restate the job title and express appreciation for the offer.  Indicate date you will let them know of your final decision.

Remember these basic rules for each of the letters you write:

  • Use good quality, white/cream, bond paper, 8 ½ x 11.
    Type all letters.  Keep each to one page and write on only one side of the paper.
  • Always include your contact information at the top of the page and address your letters to a specific person using his/her correct title.
  • Keep each letter brief and concise.  Do not include extraneous information. 
  • Use "I" sparingly.
  • Tell the truth - do not falsify or exaggerate your experience or accomplishments.
  • Use standard business format but be sure to make it as personal as possible.
  • Never duplicate your letters.  Mass-produced letters are easily recognized. 
  • Proofread!  Have several people, including Career Services staff, check your letter for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
