How do I write a cover letter?
The cover letter is a very important part of your job search process and one of the key ways in which an employer assesses your ability to communicate effectively. We understand that the cover letter is also very different than anything you've had to write as a student and therefore preparing one can be difficult.
A well written cover letter is your opportunity to:
- Introduce yourself to employers and arouse their interest.
- Show the employer that you are sincerely interested in their organization and have done some research about the company and their products or service.
- Explain how your skills and qualifications (including academic background, work experience and personal qualities) relate to the requirements of the position. This is your chance to sell yourself and show how you can add value to the organization. Be sure to include any relevant accomplishments from your previous experience.
- Demonstrate your written communication skills as well as your organizational ability
A cover letter should always:
- Convey an enthusiastic and energetic tone.
- Accompany a résumé.
- Have a professional appearance and be printed on the same high quality paper as your résumé.
- Have your contact information at the top.
- Be written in clear, concise and professional language. Use "I" sparingly.
- Be printed individually - not photocopied or mass produced.
- Be addressed to a particular individual in the company, preferably the head of the department for which you want to work.
- Avoid discussing salary requirements unless specifically required. In these cases, provide a range and mention that it is negotiable (if it is).
- Be free of any spelling, grammatical or typographical errors.
- Be tailored to the position to which you are applying.
- Be no more than one page, 3 - 4 paragraphs maximum.
- Tell the truth - not falsify or exaggerate your experience or accomplishments.
