Exploring Careers

"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart…. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes."
- Carl Jung

I don't know what I want to do.  How do I find out?
Some people are born knowing what they want to do. They are a minority, however, and for many undergraduates the most daunting task is discovering where their interests lie and choosing that first career.

How do I start exploring different careers?
Visit the Career Services Office early and often in your college career. Through various tools, tests and exercises we can help you to explore your interests, values and skills and identify how these translate into specific career choices.

  • Keep a "career exploration portfolio" which incorporates all of your materials (assessments, worksheets, interviews, etc.) and allows you to keep track of your questions, findings, insights and ideas.
  • Complete at least one internship as well as the prerequisite course, EXP 2340, "Introduction to Experiential Learning." An internship is a great way to explore different career options and employers rate practical experience higher than any other criteria in their hiring decisions.
  • Take EXP 2800 "Career Development." This 3 credit course will help you explore personal and professional career choices and give you tools for the job search process.
  • Explore your interests and talents by choosing an academic major and concentration that you find intriguing. Talk with your professors about their backgrounds, experience and professional contacts.
  • Use all the resources available to explore specific jobs and industries. Our resource library has a range of helpful titles like "Jobs and Careers in Non-Profit Organizations" and "Careers in Criminal Justice."
  • Explore some careers that you think might be interesting by informational interviewing or job shadowing. The Career Services Office can help you to identify suitable employers and teach you the necessary skills for professional job searching.
  • Do some volunteer work. Spending even a small amount of time at an organization can give you insight about the company and the industry and what it might be like to work in the field.

Please contact the Career Services Office (Hafer 205) at 617-333-2195, or email careerservices@curry.edu to make an appointment for individual help in exploring career options.
