Advising and Services

To Help You Reach a New Level of Excellence, Our Services Must be Excellent

At Curry College, we treat you like the adult you are. We recognize that as graduate students, your needs are different from our undergraduates, and therefore, we go to great lengths to structure our services appropriately.  For example, our career and academic advisors, trained in working with adult students, are available after normal hours to accommodate working professionals. Our Student Financial Services Office, which extends its hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, has staff dedicated to working with graduate students. Curry College’s world-renowned Program for Advancement of Learning, designed to support students with specific learning disabilities, has a separate Adult Center. We pride ourselves on our high quality of service, our friendly atmosphere, and our respect for the adult student.

Whether you’re just getting started in a graduate program or looking for some help along the way, the services at Curry College are waiting for you.

Getting Started

Help Along the Way

Career and Academic Advising
Curry College’s Career and Academic Advisors are here to help you succeed, not only in your graduate program, but in your career path as well.  Whether you are a graduate student or a prospective graduate student, we invite you to make an appointment at any of our campus locations to discuss your career, your degree program, transfer credit and degree requirements, or course selection. We periodically hold Open Houses and Information Sessions at a variety of campus locations and at times that are convenient for the working adult. These are wonderful opportunities to meet faculty members, learn about the program, and meet your fellow students.

Open Enrollment
As a graduate student, you may enroll in two courses in the Master of Criminal Justice and the Master of Education programs before you are formally admitted. Applications should be submitted prior to completion of the second course. The open enrollment option does not apply to the Master of Business Administration program.

Transfer Credit Policy
Transfer credit into graduate degree programs is limited to 6 credit hours of equivalent graduate-level work from another accredited institution, subject to specific program guidelines and program review.

2007-2008 Verification Form
2008-2009 Verification Form

International Students
International students must be admitted to an undergraduate or graduate degree program as full-time students. Because international student admission, transfer credit, and visa paperwork is complex and takes time to process, the deadline is June 1, 2007 for attending Fall 2007 and October 1, 2007 for attending Spring 2008 semester, and is January 28, 2008 for attending Summer 2008 semester.

All international educational transcripts and certificates must be translated into English AND evaluated by an accredited agency specializing in international educational evaluations.  In Boston you may use the Center for Educational Documentation (CED), 617-338-7171, www.cedevaluations.com.  Additional accredited agencies may be found at www.naces.org.

College transcripts must be evaluated on a course-by-course basis.  Candidates for bachelor’s degrees must also verify U. S. high school equivalency if completed outside the United States.

If English is not your first language, you must submit official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores.

Please meet with an academic advisor for more information about these requirements or to discuss procedures.

Graduate Academic Standing Policy
The goal of the graduate academic standing policy is to support the successful academic achievement of students.  Curry College is committed to academic excellence, and expects its graduate students to maintain good academic standing.

Good Academic Standing
A graduate, degree-seeking student, whether full-time or part-time, is in good academic standing when he or she meets standards as measured by cumulative grade point average (GPA), minimum grade achieved in each course, and cumulative attempted credits.  Academic Standing for all graduate students will be measured at the end of each Fall and Spring semester.
Minimum Grade in Each Course
The minimum passing grade in each graduate course is a B-.   A grade of C+ or lower in any course is cause for academic review.
Minimum Grade Point Average
Students enrolled in any Master’s program at Curry College must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to remain in good academic standing.  Academic review will take place if the GPA falls below a 3.0.
Cumulative Credits
In addition to the GPA standards and the minimum grade in each course, good academic standing also depends on a satisfactory rate of progress toward the degree as measured by cumulative attempted credits.  A student is making satisfactory progress when at least 67% of attempted credits have been completed with a passing grade, as defined above.
Attempted credits are those credits for which a student is registered at the end of the College’s official add/drop period.  Thus, attempted credits include all graded courses and transfer courses, courses from which a student has withdrawn after the drop/add period (W), and courses that are incomplete (IN).
The cumulative GPA is based on graded credits only.  Transfer courses, Withdrawals, and Incompletes are not included in the cumulative GPA.
Academic Review
Academic review may result in the student being asked to repeat course work, being placed on academic probation, or in some cases, being dismissed from the program.
Students are expected to comply with the terms of continued enrollment outlined as a result of an academic review.  Failure to comply may result in dismissal from the College.
Academic Eligibility for Financial Aid
Unsatisfactory academic performance may result in the loss of financial aid eligibility.  Students should consult the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for Graduate Students and the Financial Aid Department personnel to determine their academic eligibility for financial aid.
Academic Dismissal
A student is subject to dismissal from the College if his or her academic record does not meet the standards for good academic standing and/or if he or she does not meet the terms of continued enrollment outlined following an academic review.  A dismissed student is expected to be ineligible for re-admission for at least one year.
Appeals
A student may appeal decisions that proceed from academic standing policies by submitting an Academic Petition form, available in the Registrar’s office, to: The Academic Petition Committee, Curry College Registrar’s Office, 1071 Blue Hill Avenue, Milton, MA 01286.   Assistance with any part of the appeal process, including advice on stating the bases for the petition, is available by consulting with the Registrar’s staff.

The Adult Center at PAL
Curry College has received international acclaim for its Program for Advancement of Learning (PAL). The program’s mission is to provide support to college-able students with specific learning disabilities, and it has done so, successfully, for over 2,000 students. The Adult Center at PAL serves graduate students who will work with professionals trained in adult learning disabilities.

Essential Skills Services for Graduate Students
The Essential Skills Center (ESC) provides academic support to students at Curry College. The ESC is located on the second floor of Levin Library.

It is assumed that students who are accepted into the MED, MBA, MACJ and MSN degree programs have the required academic skills to be successful in their chosen disciplines. Occasionally, however, students may experience difficulty in a particular area of study within the program. In this case, students may contact the Essential Skills Center for support in that area.

Provided that such specialized personnel are available through the ESC, graduate students may purchase support in clusters of 5 one-hour sessions for $175.00, or 10 one-hour sessions for $350.00. Students may sign up and pay for ESC services through the Division of Continuing and Graduate Studies, located at 55 Atherton St. After they have registered for the service, they may contact Annmarie Koehler at 617 333-2248 to make an appointment with an ES professional.

The student will keep a time card in the Essential Skills Center, which must be signed by the ES professional at the conclusion of each session. Students who have contracted for services during the academic year must utilize all of the sessions by September 1 of a particular academic year. After September 1, students may purchase sessions for the next academic year. Students must give the ES professional 24 hours notice by calling 617 333-2248 if they intend to cancel an appointment. Otherwise, the session will be deducted from their remaining sessions.

Emergency Closing
Hotline: (617) 333-2075
Please call the Campus Snow Emergency Hotline for up-to-date information on whether classes have been canceled.  Messages will also be recorded on the main numbers for the Continuing Education Offices in Milton, Plymouth, and Worcester.  The Snow Emergency Hotline is generally updated by 7:00 a.m.  Decisions on cancellation of evening classes are generally made by 3:00 p.m. If classes are canceled in Milton, they are also canceled at ALL other locations, including Plymouth, Worcester, and Medford.  Sometimes Worcester makes an independent decision to cancel while the other locations remain open.  Every effort is made to contact faculty and students directly when a decision is made to close the College.  If in doubt, we advise you to call the Hotline before traveling to class.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, Curry College permits its students to inspect their records wherever appropriate and to challenge specific parts of them when they feel it is necessary to do so. Specific details of the law as it applies to the College are contained in the Curry College Course Catalog.
