Assistive Technology & Accommodations

PAL hosts an extensive collection of assistive technologies that have been shown to benefit students with learning differences.  Under the expert instruction of Marie Saulnier, M.Ed., our Assistant Coordinator for Assistive Technology and Accommodations, students can be trained specifically in the use of a wide range of technologies.  Our Assistive Technology (AT) Center houses many cutting edge innovations including dictation software that allows students to dictate their papers, instead of typing them in;  several Kurzweilreading centers that allow students to scan in reading materials and listen to them read by a software program; AlphaSmart portable keyboards; mapping software; and others.  The collection was recently upgraded thanks to the awarding of Federal Funds to support the excellent work PAL has done in providing model assistance to our students in the area of technology.

Extended Time for Exams

All current and former PAL students are able to take advantage of extended time on exams throughout the semester. Extra time is easily arranged through the AT Center with a simple sign-up in advance. Students are able to take their exams in a quiet environment where Kurzweil readers are available for those who prefer to listen to their exams read aloud; other supports include computers for students whose essay writing is improved with the use of spellcheck and grammar check and Dragon Naturally Speaking software for those who have been trained to use the dictation software.

Recorded Textbooks

PAL students are able to receive their textbooks on CD through the Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic Program (RFB&D).   In addition, PAL provides its own recorded versions of textbooks and readings which are not available through RFB&D .  New students receive a mailing during the summer describing the recorded textbooks program at PAL and those who register for the program can have their recordings ordered prior to the beginning of the semester so that they may begin using them as soon as their courses begin.

Kurzweil Readers

A collection of six Kurzweil readers - computer software that reads texts that are scanned into the computer - provides an invaluable resource to PAL students with reading difficulties who are able to gain comprehension from text that is presented in a multi-sensory way.   The features include highlighting of text as the material is read, dictionary look up of unfamiliar words, and ability to control the speed and voice of the reader.   Training is provided for students and peer support is also available - however, many students find that a brief introductory session is all that is required before successfully using this important tool.

Dragon Naturally Speaking

Training is also available on use of the Dragon Naturally Speaking , software that allows students to speak their essays to a computer if keyboarding presents a challenge.   Once trained on the use of the software, students can sign up to use the program during exams or on papers.  This program has been a very useful tool for students who have difficulty expressing themselves in writing, but are able to speak their responses very easily.

Inspiration

Mapping is a very effective organizational strategy for many PAL students, and the outlining program Inspiration is a helpful tool for developing web-like maps to assist with paper-writing.  Allowing easy movement between traditional linear outlines and the more visually oriented web or map formats, the program can be useful for students with a wide range of learning styles.
