Teaching Resources for Faculty
LEARNING DISABILITIES REFERENCE (LDR)
The Learning Disabilities Reference (LDR) is a brochure developed by PAL faculty to simplify definitions of language-based learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, as well as processing and executive function difficulties. It concisely addresses legal issues and provides some teaching support for working with college students who exhibit these learning challenges. It is available at the Learning Center for faculty by contacting Dr. Laurie Fox at 617-333-2056 or lfox@curry.edu.
UNTIMED EXAM POLICY AT PAL
We always recommend that students and professors have conversations about taking tests and quizzes before the test or quiz takes place. These dialogues make the students' decision to take a test untimed more informed and intentional, and they also help the professor better understand the students' needs, which often go beyond the need for extra time. Some students need to use a computer for writing, or the Zurweil machine for text to speech recognition, or Dragon software for speaking into the computer with voice recognition. Some students simply need quiet and privacy in an area free from distractions. Accommodations often allow a student to perform at his or her best where they have the opportunity to express their knowledge in a way that their disability would not allow otherwise.
