The Communication Department can trace its history to the founding of the college back in 1879 . It was known as a "School of Expression" for many years and offered students numerous courses in fields of study like theatre and the arts.
Curry's Communication department may be best known for its award-winning radio concentration. In fact, Curry was one of the first schools in the country to offer Radio Broadcasting as a course and major. Our roots in radio can be traced back to 1932, when students performed various plays, readings, and impersonations over the radio. Today, hundreds of radio and television broadcasters nationwide are Curry alumni.
Theatre, as mentioned above, was part of the original mission of Curry back in 1879. Today, Curry's theatre program produces plays both fall and spring semester, along with other special events. Curry theatre performs on two stages: the main stage in Keith Auditorium and in the Black Box Theatre housed behind the seats in Keith.
Television was first offered in the early 1990s through a cooperative agreement with Milton Cable Access. In 2001, a donation from the Hirsh family gave television a home here on the Curry campus. The all-digital facilities now allow students to learn both studio and field production in an environment that is truly state-of-the-art.
Film Studies began in the 1980s with courses in 8 mm film making. Today, students learn the theories and craft of film with Curry's unique partnership with Film Shack, one of the top independent filmmaking companies in the country.
Public Relations and Journalism studies have also been staples of the Communication department for many years. Today journalism students work on "The Currier Times", the newspaper of record for the Curry campus. And P.R. students find themselves interning at some of the biggest agencies in and around Boston.
In 2002, the "Curry Speaking Center" opened for business. Housed on the top floor of the new Academic and Performance Center, the speaking center staff work with students to help with speeches and presentations for classes.
