The Communication Department is adding three new concentration choices to an already robust selection that Curry students can choose from. The new concentrations include an option called "Individual Initiated Concentration", which will allow students to craft his or her own specialized subject area if it doesn't fit a specific category.
The first concentration is called Business Communication which is replacing Organizational Communication in the catalog. The Business Communication Concentration is designed for students who are interested in studying the internal and external communication needs of organizations. Students may enjoy careers in communication consulting, human resources, sales, management, and political campaigns. Professor Sharon Sinnott can be contacted for more information on this concentration.
The second concentration is Relational Communication. This concentration promotes an awareness of communication principles and practices at work and in personal settings. A student may contact Professor Ruth Spillberg for details on this concentration.
The third concentration, as discussed above, is called Individual Initiated Concentration. Career choices in the Communication field are expansive. Occasionally, students have an interest in a subject area not covered in our traditional concentrations. The Individual Initiated Concentration allows a student to study a career choice using courses from our catalog in consultation with a Communication faculty advisor.
Students fill out an application to launch an IIC and then work with a Communication faculty advisor whose expertise is closest to the career option the student wishes to pursue.
An IIC typically requires 18 credits of coursework, and may include courses from within the categories in the general Communication requirements, if applicable. Examples of IIC include Broadcast Journalism, Photojournalism, Event Planning, and Music & Audio Production.
Together with these choices, the Communication Department now features nine concentrations. Students may also pursue a general Communication degree or a minor in Communication.
