On April 18, 2007, five of the Speech Associates: Laura Cluff, Jessica Hartwell, Ben Radzicki, Isabelle Rene, and Allison Sturchio, along with Speaking Center Director, Vicki Nelson traveled to North Carolina to attend the 6th Annual National Association for Communication Centers Conference at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
The conference, held each year, allows students and faculty from colleges and universities all over the country to get together in order to exchange information and ideas about their speaking centers. This year, Director Vicki Nelson and three of the Associates, Ali, Isabelle and Laura, had the opportunity to present a panel on day two of the conference.
The session entitled, “Examining the Issues of Cultural Differences, Learning Differences, and Student Stress As They Impact the Work of the Speaking Center,” focused on helping students and faculty understand the importance of these issues, how they impact a student, and most importantly how to help.
In addition to presenting, the Curry College Speech Associates were able to collaborate on ideas with students from other schools and attend various public speaking workshops. The conference not only gave the Associates some great ideas for improving the Speaking Center here at Curry, but also proved to be a great bonding experience.
