English

The English Area of the Humanities Department at Curry College offers several major and minor programs that are designed to meet
the individual needs and interests of our students.

English, offers three possible concentrations with the major: one in traditional Literature, one in American Studies, and a third in
Women in Literature.

The Writing Program offers three concentrations through the English area: Creative Writing, Journalism, and Professional Writing.

In addition to our academic program, Curry College publishes a collection of student writing in the Curry Arts Journal. With writing
awards each year for students, the Area also hosts faculty and student readings, invites prestigious writers to present and share their
work with the student body through its Writer-in-Residence series, and publishes a student-run newspaper, The Currier Times. The
English Area offers majors and minors in all subjects the opportunities to present their original pieces of literature and/or journalism in
writing forums.

Majors in all English concentrations must complete 30 credits hours above the 1000-level. English majors must take a core curriculum
of three out of five courses (listed below) in addition to one senior seminar or capstone course for a total of 12 credits. Six additional
courses above the 1000-level, or an additional 18 credits must be taken in order to complete the major. Those wishing to focus on a
specific area must take five of the remaining six courses in their chosen concentration.

Core Requirements: For the English Major in each of the concentrations
Students majoring in any of the concentrations in English must include in their program a capstone/ senior seminar (3 credits), and at
least three of the following courses (9 credits) for a total of 12 credits:

Students must complete an additional six courses or 18 credits above the 1000-level (for a total of 30 credits) to complete the major. In
order to specialize in Literature, American Studies,Women in Literature, Creative Writing, Journalism, or Professional Writing, students
must take at least five of the remaining six required courses in that concentration. A sixth course may an elective course at the 2000-
level. Students may concentrate their studies in one of the following tracks:

Concentration in American Literacy Studies

This concentration gives the student a comparative perspective on the important questions and practical considerations that form the
subject of literary studies across a broad spectrum of cultures and viewpoints in America. Students must take both ENG 2110:
American Literature I and ENG 2120: American Literature II. In addition, this concentration requires successful completion of at

This concentration builds skill in writing and in adapting writing to different formats and requirements. The concentration provides a
foundation and marketable skill for work in publishing, journalism, public relations, publicity, advertising, and media combining
words and images. Practical skills include experience in desktop publishing and other aspects of technology related to publishing, and
in the creation of a writer’s portfolio. Participation in a student publication is strongly recommended. Students must complete at least

Concentration in Professional Writing

As with the concentration in Journalism, this concentration builds skills in writing and in adapting writing to different formats and
requirements. The concentration provides a foundation and marketable skill for work in publishing, journalism, public relations,
publicity, advertising, and media, combining words and images. Practical skills include experience in desktop publishing and other related
aspects of technology and the creation of a writer’s portfolio. Those concentrating in Professional Writing should take an internship
focused on professional writing arranged through Experiential Education. Students in the Professional Writing concentration must take
