Residential Property Management program continues to grow

Do you want to be a hot commodity when you graduate?

While most students are looking for ways to distinguish themselves from the thousands of other students vying for jobs and internships, you could be mulling over several opportunities available to you.

Where does this opportunity exist? Right here in the Management Department at Curry College...in the Residential Property Management program.

What is the Residential Property Management program?   First a little background…

The residential property industry is a multi-billion dollar industry consisting of locally owned companies with operations in the local area to large national apartment communities throughout the country.   They all have one thing in common - more job openings than qualified applicants to fill them.  The National Apartment Association, a leading industry trade group, recently formed the Education Institute to “address the critical need to promote apartment industry careers and develop classroom training."  It was through this unique industry/academic partnership that the Residential Management Program was born.  Currently, there are less than 10 universities and colleges offering programs that focus on residential property management.

An Advisory Board formed to assist Curry in the growth of the RPM program consists of the “who’s who” in the residential property industry both locally and nationally.   The Advisory Board and the industry in general are committed to the Residential Property Management program and to providing internship opportunities to Curry students.

So, what does a property manager do and what skills does he/she need to succeed?  To put it simply, a Property Manager runs an apartment community. Although the common perception is that a property manager is a glorified maintenance man, the reality is that the job requires many skills.  A typical 250-unit apartment community is valued at over $50,000,000 with an annual budget of $3 – 5 million dollars and a staff of 6 – 10 employees.   You are in a sense, the CEO of a small company, marketing the community, managing the budget, overseeing the operations and dealing with the public an a daily basis. The Residential Property Management program will provide you with the knowledge and skills to successfully enter this exciting industry.

Any student seeking an undergraduate degree in Management may elect the Residential Property Management concentration.  Continuing Education students who are not enrolled in the undergraduate degree program may pursue a Certificate in Residential Property Management.

If you are a prospective or current student interested in learning more about the program or the industry, feel free to e-mail Professor Stephen Brown at sbrown0906@curry.edu.
