In Professor Chuck Towle’s Field Ecology course, “Field” is underscored. A recent field trip took students to Gloucester, a seaport rich in history as well as natural interest, where they studied the intertidal seaweed zonation in the harbor.
On other harbor trips, Curry students have donned wet suits to study starfish, sea urchins, and other plant life of the subtidal zone. Trips to a variety of sites up and down the Massachusetts coast have allowed students to look at how species change and evolve in response to environmental differences. Professor Towle’s course reflects his passion for getting out into the environment that he is studying. He recently spent a sabbatical studying sea caves on the Maine coast.
