The Scientist as Author and Educator
Physics professor Jerry Touger is always amused when students talk to him about what “they” say in the textbook. The reason? He wrote the textbook. He also authored the extensive interactive materials on the web site that accompanies the book.
Introductory Physics: Building Understanding (©2006), published by leading science publisher John Wiley & Sons, has been used at several flagship state universities. “But the real satisfaction,” he says, “is being able to use it with my own students.”
Although his doctorate is in solid state physics, Touger realized in graduate school that what excited him most about physics are the mind that does it and the mind that learns it.
