Professor Cathy Santos presented "Quality & Safety: Transforming Practice through Education" to the Sigma Theta Chapter at Large in April 2010 at Sinai Hospital in Stoughton, MA. The presentation included strategies that have been successfully used to incorporate quality & safety into Nursing curricula in general.
She will also present "Emerging Technologies in Nursing Education" in July, 2010 in Boston, MA. This will be a panel discussion to illustrate models of preparing students to use electronic health records with the goal of understanding meaningful use for improving patient outcomes.
Professor Michelle McMahon presented her poster, "Toward a Mid-Range Theory of Nursing Presence" at the 22nd Scientific Session of the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS). She was chosen to represent the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth's PhD in Nursing program at the early doctoral poster session which was held during the annual conference, March 2010 in Providence, RI.
Professor Barbara Pinchera presented a poster at The Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses annual meeting in April 2010. The poster outlined her dissertation, "Experiences of newly licensed nurses: the First 18 Months" which concerns lateral violence in the workplace.
Dr. Pinchera also recently received The Promise of Nursing for Massachusetts Regional Faculty Fellowship from the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association.
Professors Maureen Murphy, Cathy Santos and Elizabeth Kudzma presented a poster on sustainable teaching strategies at Curry College at the QSEN (Quality & Safety Education for Nurses) National Forum in June, 2010 in Colorado.
Professors Don Anderson and Susan LaRocco are both active members of the American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN). Dr. Anderson served as the Education Committee Chairperson for the 2009 annual conference in Cincinnati and was elected to a second term on the Board of Directors. Dr. LaRocco presented "Men in the American Journal of Nursing: The First 100 Years" at the same conference.
Professor Susan LaRocco recently received the Mary Ann Garrigan award, presented to her at the Theta Chapter -at-Large of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Induction in Spring 2010. This award recognizes significant contributions in nursing education and research.
Theta Chapter is a chapter at large with Simmons College, Curry College and Boston University School of Nursing.
LaRocco also had her article, "Assisting Nursing Students to Develop Empathy Using a Writing Assignment," published in Nurse Educator (Jan-Feb 2010). The article is about the assignment that she uses with accelerated nursing students who read a nonfiction book, written by a patient or family member on the experience of illness, and reflect on it in a paper.
Professor Elizabeth Kudzma recently co-published, "Pharmacogenomics: Personalizing Drug Therapy" in the October 2009 issue of the American Journal of Nursing, 109 (10), 50-58.

Professors Susan James, Elinor Nugent and Linda Caldwell received a Grant in the amount of $26,800 from the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education earlier this semester. The review committee for the grant was comprised of individuals highly knowledgeable on issues of nursing education, as well as authorities on the workforce development needs of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The selection process was very competitive with only five schools of nursing receiving Phase 2 funding.
The grant allows collaboration with a practice partner, Hebrew Rehabilitation Center/Senior Life in Roslindale, MA, and two education partners, Quincy College and Cape Cod Community College. The discussion, analysis and collaboration with the partners will be used to revise curriculum of the RN-BS program at Curry College. Our goals are to eliminate duplication of content among programs and to provide a seamless transition for registered nurses from AD to BS and from BS to the Clinical Nurse Leader MSN program at Curry.
Professor Don Anderson was certified in Medical-Surgical Nursing by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses. Professor Anderson was also inducted as a “Luther Christman Fellow” at the American Assembly for Men in Nursing at the October 2008 conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Society of Luther Christman Fellows recognize contributions to nursing made by men, fund AAMN Foundation scholarships to support men in nursing, fund research grants by the AAMN Foundation in areas of men’s health and issues of men in nursing. The fellowship is open to anyone wishing to be a Luther Christman Fellow.
Professors Linda Caldwell and Linda Tenofsky (and G. Luke) published “Creating Value Added Linkages Through Creative Programming: A Partnership for Nursing Education” in The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing.
Professor Susan James received the Mary Ann Garrigan award from the Theta-at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. She also co-edited the third edition of Nursing Care of Children: Principles and Practice published by Elsevier.
Professor Maureen Murphy was elected to the Curry College Faculty Counselor position of the Theta-at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.
Professor Elinor Nugent had a poster presentation titled "Implementing Changes in Educational Strategies Based on Orientation Experiences of the New Graduate" at a conference on Cape Cod called Smooth Sailing:The Transition from New Graduate to Practicing Nurse.
Professor Eileen O’Connell, a Schweitzer Fellow-For-Life, is a member of the committee that will select the 2009-2010 Fellows. The Program, in the tradition of Nobel Prize laureate Albert Schweitzer, promotes compassion and service in health care professions. Members of the fellowship include major medical schools, nursing programs, and allied health professionals.
Professor Eileen O’Keefe was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International as a community leader.
