Curry Professor, Husband Continue to Shine Light on African Hospital in Need

Winifred J. Harley School of Nursing in Ganta, LiberiaEd Quigley, the husband of Curry's own Dr. Susan LaRocco, snapped this shot while the couple was visiting the Winifred J. Harley School of Nursing in Ganta, Liberia, West Africa.  The photo is now published as the cover photo in 'The American Journal of Nursing' December 2009 issue .

In 2006, Dr. LaRocco organized a book drive, sponsored by the Theta at Large chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, facilitating the delivery of hundreds of nursing textbooks to the hospital's doorstep.

The facility lacks the most basic of supplies and resources.  In the photo, taken in a "central supply area" disposable gloves are being washed and hung to dry to be reused.  The hospital has a generator for electricity, but cannot afford to run it 24 hours a day.  And at night, the nurses must carry oil lamps to tend to their patients.
