About the Department

Social class, gender, ethnicity, and other social distinctions separate and join us into isolated individuals and factions in interesting and complex ways.

Sociology explores these social processes and helps students learn to look at social life in very different and informed ways.  Criminal Justice looks at how these factors influence individuals and groups who choose to challege the social order and commit crime and choose contesting life styles.  Each major informs the other and students often major in one and minor in the other discipline.  It is also possible to major in both.

Our department is uniquely suited to serve both disciplines as our faculty is made up of both academics and working practitioners, each bringing the latest and best ideas from the academy and the street directly to the classroom.

Majors in Sociology and Criminal Justice enjoy a wide range of rewarding careers.
