Coming from a small, all girls high school, Janine was looking for a College where she would receive individualized attention. She was also looking for a strong Nursing program close to Boston and got all of those things at Curry College. Janine credits the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and her experience playing soccer with enhancing her early development.
"The lessons I learned on the field and how to play on a team, losing and winning, continue to play a role in my career," says Janine. "Doug Williamson, our coach exemplified commitment, determination and passion which carried over to the team. I've been able to apply these qualities to my roles at work, especially building teams that helped launch some incredible products."
Despite studying Nursing for three years, it was her Management Minor that would play a major role in her career plans. Curry's focus on the individual helped ensure success.
"I consulted with Peter Hainer and was able to work with him and design a self-initiated degree in Health Service Management. I had to take an extra semester at Curry because I was determined to get that degree. The individualized approach that exists at Curry gave me confidence and support during a time of significant change in my life."
In addition to Peter Hainer, Janine cites the late Claire Miranda as having a major impact on her by being both demanding in the classroom yet compassionate towards her students.
Trying to employ her healthcare background, Janine found herself in the marketing department of the chemical division of a pharmaceutical company. After the company downsized, Janine took responsibility for most of the marketing materials and trade shows. Four years later, Janine became marketing manager and then moved on to Sony Electronics where she worked for ten years.
"Looking back, I realize now that the impact Curry had along the way was that it's ok to try things out and make changes in your life that will make you happy. I never would have known I would enjoy a career in marketing so much." At Sony, Janine received two Management Awards in recognition of successful product launches and the market expansion of new technologies as well as the COO Special Recognition Award.
Currently Janine is working for LG Electronics, Inc. in Digital Appliances marketing. Her primary responsibility is in launching new products for a company enjoying tremendous growth in the United States. During her rise in the corporate world, Janine has still kept an eye on the College where it all started.
"I was thrilled when I found out that Mr. Quigley took over as President. I knew the school was in good hands and in for some great changes. I never would have imagined what has happened. He was a great business law teacher and had a great sense of business. The school has clearly benefited from the impact he's made. The fact that Curry reaches out to alumni and hosts events throughout the country is a big step in bringing past and present students together. We all benefit from seeing old friends, making new ones and establishing connections with each other."
Janine refers to the importance of staying involved with Curry so that current students can benefit from the experience of alumni.
"Experience is the greatest teacher. I've learned that in school, in business and in life, you learn from your own experiences as well as from others."
