Stephen N. Zanni '68 has a long history of service to his community having served in the Methuen and Lawrence areas beginning almost immediately after he graduated from Curry in 1968. He has held positions on the Lawrence School Committee (1971-1979), the Methuen School Committee (1991-1993), and the Methuen City Council (1994-1997, 2006-present). Steve is a past President of the St. Alfio Society, past President of the Methuen Forest Lake Association and current Chairman of the Community Center Trust in Lawrence.
Earlier this month, he was reelected to the Methuen City Council with the highest vote total of any candidate. His fellow Council Members also elected him Chairman, as they have each year of his last two terms, in recognition of his leadership and service. Steve has also organized Methuen's annual high school football banquet for the last 16 years.
A dedicated teacher, administrator and coach, Steve understands the value of education. The education he received at Curry allowed him to pursue his career goals and earn a master's degree. "I truly believe it's important to help others and give back to your community, to make it better than it was." One theme central to all of Steve's outreach efforts is his heavy emphasis on working as a team. "We is always better than I," states Steve. "I approach my work by trying to get a consensus of people working together."
Along the way he has never forgotten his alma mater, serving as a volunteer and supporter for decades. A long time supporter of Curry Football, Steve and other former Curry players take pride in what the program has become. As a player from the late 1960s, Steve remembers the programs roots and how he and his classmates laid the foundation for success. "It means a lot to stay involved with Curry because I value the friends I made and the education I received. It put me in line for future success."
The many tasks of the Methuen City Council will keep Steve busy for the next few years. He will oversee the construction of a new football clubhouse and a new technology focused academic center. We're grateful for his involvement and proud of his many contributions to the community. We can all take pride in the fact that it started right here, at Curry College.
