LAST-MINUTE DRIVE STALLS AS CURRY FALLS TO WIDENER, 22-17, IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION

MILTON, Mass. - Justin Horning’s four-yard touchdown catch with 1:41 remaining provided the decisive margin as visiting Widener University hung on to defeat Curry College, 22-17. The loss snapped the Colonels’ 34-game home winning streak.

On the final possession of the game, Curry (0-2) drove 69 yards to the Widener 1-yard line, but could not cash in on the game-winning score as the Pride defense stiffened at the goal line.

On the game’s opening drive, Widener (1-0) used just three plays to cover 37 yards and quarterback Chris Haupt found paydirt from 1-yard out to give the Pride a 7-0 edge.

The Colonels responded on their first drive, getting a 25-yard field goal from Matt Alksnisis with 8:33 left in the period to cut the lead to 7-3.  That completed a 12-play, 59-yard drive in which the Colonels converted a fourth down.

Curry grabbed its first lead with 2:57 to go in the opening frame.  One play after a 22-yard catch by Horning, Curry’s Scott Driscoll stepped in front of a Haupt pass and ran back the interception 55 yards for a touchdown and a 10-7 lead.

Widener regained the lead, 13-10, with 5:07 left in the second quarter on a six-yard touchdown run by Ian Decker.
On the Pride’s next possession, Haupt fumbled and Chris Goll picked it up and raced 44 yards to the Widener 15-yard line.

On the next play, Joe Freeman ran a sweep left and dove inside the pylon for the touchdown with 27 seconds left giving the hosts a 17-13 edge at the break.

The Pride closed to 17-16 midway through the third quarter when Matt Breslin booted a 30-yard field goal, ending a 12-play, 57-yard march.

Neither team would score again until Horning caught what proved to be the game-winning touchdown pass.

For Curry, Freeman rushed 27 times for a game-high 94 yards. Cavanaugh finished 9-of-24 for 104 yards. On defense, Driscoll recorded a team-high six tackles (all solo) to go along with his 55-yard interception return for a touchdown.

For Widener, Horning hauled in 10 passes for 207 yards.  Haupt completed 22-of-46 passes for 315 yards with two interceptions. On defense, Shane Szumski had a game-high 10 tackles (9 solo), including two for a loss.
