Athletic health care has been a priority at Curry for many years. The College has expanded its athletic training room and equipped it with state-of-the-art therapy equipment (ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation and whirlpools).
Curry has enhanced its sports medicine operations under Head Athletic Trainer John Ostrowski and his staff of two certified athletic trainers. These three professionals can now provide more closely supervised, individual rehabilitation programs for student-athletes.
Ostrowski also draws from area athletic training education programs for assistance. In 1992, Curry became affiliated with Northeastern University’s athletic training program. The affiliation allows Northeastern students in athletic training to be placed at Curry for a portion of their clinical and Co-op work. In turn, the student athletic trainers, under staff supervision, provide daily medical coverage for all practices and games for the Colonel’s 13 varsity sports.
Recently, the athletic training program became affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital. This association gives Curry access to all the resources of a world-class hospital, including some of the best physicians in the country. Dr. Bertram Zarins and Tom Gill serve as team physicians, while Dr. Shane Barton is the Colonels’ assistant team physician. Together, they are responsible for coordinating medical care for all of Curry’s student-athletes.
Zarins – a specialist in orthopedic surgery and chief of Mass. General’s sports medicine department – is also team physician for the New England Patriots, Boston Bruins, New England Revolution and Boston Breakers. Gill was recently named as team physician for the Boston Red Sox.
Barton – whose sole external affiliation is with Curry College – provides musculoskeletal physicals for the school’s incoming athletes, makes weekly visits to the athletic training room to evaluate injuries, and is present at all home football and hockey games.
