Monica DiStefano '14 - Scituate Public Schools

Monica DiStefano '14 was nine for nine when it came to applying and getting accepted to college, so she had several options when it came to pursuing an undergraduate degree.  But throughout her college search there was one school which stood out among the pack.

"I actually visited Curry three times before I made my decision.  I loved everything about it, including the location and sense of community I got when I stepped on campus.  It just felt like it would be easy to fit right in."

And fit right in, she did.  The Sudbury, Massachusetts native and Elementary Education major would eventually become the President of the Education Club in only her second year at Curry.

"I can't say enough about the Education program. I was so close with all of my professors...I was always emailing and meeting with them.  And the small class sizes were great - they were so personal.  I loved it!"

She also volunteered at Quincy Catholic Academy and Hansen Elementary School in Canton and worked at the Curry Early Childhood Center on campus as an Assistant Teacher (preschool and toddler certified).

"It's so easy to get involved here, whether it's in clubs or with work both on and off campus."

In the summer of 2012, DiStefano worked with the award-winning BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) Foundation summer program in the Boston Public Schools - a position she earned through hard work and her connection with Curry's Education program.

DiStefano's passion for teaching includeded advising her fellow students as well, serving as a peer tutor on campus. Peer tutors are students who perform well in their particular subject of expertise, and are recommended by their professors.

"I really think peer tutoring is one of the best services Curry provides its students."

She also found that the close-knit environment at Curry made it easier to make friends, whether it be hanging out in the Residence Halls, around campus or even in nearby Boston.

"It's great that Curry has shuttles going into Boston so we were able to do things like go to Celtics and Bruins games throughout the season."

After graduating from Curry, DiStefano was immediately hired as a 6th grade math teacher in the Scituate Public School system.
