Jessica Joseph '10 - Health

Jessica Joseph

A transfer student from the Roslindale section of Boston, Jessica Joseph '10 was just a hop, skip and a jump away from Curry College but it took some time away from home and some soul searching before she realized the right fit for her was just around the corner.

"Curry originally interested me, as funny as it sounds, because the school's colors were the same as my high school," she recalled. "I didn't end up coming to Curry for my freshman year, however.   I ended up going to a large state school, excited about finally going far away from home and being in a big school. I thought that I would love being able to meet new people all the time and of course party! I ended up really not enjoying what I thought I would: it was too big, I was too far away from home, and academically I was falling behind."

At the end of that first year, Joseph decided to transfer to Curry College.

"I love to talk about being a transfer student because I feel like I am so lucky to have experienced two sides of the spectrum. Coming from such a large environment, I am so glad that I eventually found my way to Curry. The small size of this school helped me feel much more comfortable in the classroom helped me get involved with clubs and activities. I found myself here and really made a name for myself.

"I was also close enough to home that if I got really homesick I could walk about 45 minutes, take a 35-40 minute bus ride, or wait 7 minutes for a car ride home. As close as I lived to Curry, people were always surprised to hear that I was a resident. I think you get a whole other experience when you live on campus.

A Health major, Joseph is interested in Women's Health issues and her ultimate career goal is to give back to the community by becoming a Nurse Midwife.

"I learned so much through this major, ranging from specifics about diseases to how to communicate effectively with patients/clients that may be from a different background.  Professor (Katherine) Morrison is one of the best professors here at Curry! I have had her for all of my health classes so far, and when I'm making my schedule I make sure that she's teaching a class I'm signing up for. Her classes are interactive and informative and it definitely helps that she has a sense of humor."

Beyond her major, Joseph found academic opportunities to explore other personal interests as well.

"I've always really been into learning more about religion. I was trying to find stronger faith, so I'm glad that Curry offered religion classes where I could look more into my spiritual side."

To sum up her experience, she used the word 'maturity.'

"I feel I matured drastically at Curry; through the organizations I joined and the fact that I was also able to strengthen my work ethic and leadership skills. I'm so proud of myself!"

Joseph also took pride in her role as a Student Ambassador, serving as a campus tour guide for prospective students and their families.

After graduating in the spring of 2010, Joseph was hired for a Graduate Assistantship at Salem State College to work in their Residence Life office.  While at Salem State, she plans on pursuing a master's degree in Higher Education.
