Derek Thompson - M.Ed.

"Before attending Curry I was a special education teacher," recalled Derek Thompson '06. "Right before I enrolled for classes I was turned down for a job that I really wanted.  I decided to pursue a master's degree because I knew it was needed in the field of education, and because I knew that I wanted to do more with my career, although I was not sure exactly what that was."

"I looked into a couple of other local schools before calling Curry.  It was very difficult to get in touch with someone at these schools and I felt like I was just a number because the schools were so large.  The first time I called Curry I spoke with an enrollment representative and she answered all of my questions.  Looking into a master's program can be overwhelming but she truly simplified things."

I took one class before enrolling full-time and I thoroughly enjoyed the class.  Everything was individualized to me and my career specifically, and because the class size was small the class really had the opportunity to dive into the material and discuss the covered topics as they pertained to us individually.  Because of this I felt like the courses were constantly helping me in my job as opposed to being something extra I had to do at night after work."

While completing his Master of Education with a concentration in Educational Administration at Curry, Thompson was offered and accepted the position of Vice Principal at Plymouth North High School.
