William Topper - MBA Director/Faculty
At Curry College, teaching is personal to our faculty. For Bill Topper, this is especially true.
His experience as a student taking evening classes in the early 70's taught him that an authentic student-professor relationship can have a far reaching impact on the direction of a student's life.
Never thinking he'd even go to college, the tech savvy, Vietnam veteran decided to enroll in a business law class pretty much on a whim. What inspired Topper from day one was the enthusiasm of his professor.
"He really ignited me. He was able to bring very analytic subject matter alive with the art of storytelling. I couldn't wait to get to that class every Thursday night. That is when I decided that I wanted to reach higher levels of education. "
To this day Topper continues to foster that teacher-student connection as both a professor and as the Director of Curry's MBA Program.
And he knows that relationship-building begins by making the study of business relevant and using real world perspective. For example, in 2010 the consequences of the Gulf oil spill dominated many of his class discussions.
"I believe that as a professor, you not only have to bring relevance from a technical perspective, but you have to bring something of interest to students. We are tasked with constantly answering the question 'so what?' It's our job to tell the stories that answer that question."
And he makes it clear to his students that his classroom is built on everyone actively contributing.
"I get my students involved right off the bat. I can't stand a quiet class."
Topper's passion for business is obvious and by sharing his extensive knowledge and expertise with students he skillfully ignites their passion for the world of business.
"Much of what we do every day pertains to business. The act of cultivating relationships through buying and selling goods is pretty much unavoidable."
"The first time humans traded corn for meat; that transaction was a business activity. And that bartering process still exists in many parts of the world. Business is more than honorable, because when done correctly and honestly, it moves life and society forward."
As a former continuing education and graduate student who attended evening classes, Topper knows that convenience is key for his adult students. Curry offers its MBA program at both of its full service campus locations in Milton and Plymouth.
Curry's MBA is a part-time program offered in a cohort format, and requires students to attend class only one night per week.
"We make the graduate program as close to a real life work situation as possible. Students work side-by-side with the same group of people throughout the entire program, like a team, which helps build and nurture personal and professional relationships along the way."
And Topper has seen those relationships translate into a wide range of success for his students.
"As a professor you get to know your students, watch them grow and know that you had some little part in their future success. It makes me feel alive coming to work every day."
