Elena del Peral '16 - Communication/PR
Since her sophomore year of high school Elena del Peral knew she wanted to attend Curry College. Now as a junior majoring in communication with a concentration in public relations, she is exactly where she wants to be.
"I really liked the atmosphere and the fact that Curry is near Boston," Elena says, explaining her decision to attend Curry. "But what really sold me here were the classroom sizes."
Growing up in Upstate New York, Elena always knew she wanted to work in the communication field, she just wasn't sure of what type of communication she wanted to study, until recently.
"I had taken a PR class with Professor Kirk Hazlett in my first year and I really enjoyed it. I started to get this idea in my head that I wanted to do PR, so I threw myself into all PR classes and began an internship in the Publications/PR department in the Curry Office of Institutional Advancement."
This past year, Elena received the Justin Hughes Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a returning student who has participated in at least one semester in the GEAR-UP Program or a similar community outreach program, and has committed to at least one semester of continued participation in community service during each year of the award.
"Receiving the scholarship makes me want to work even harder than I am already working. I had the opportunity to meet the Hughes family, and to see the joy and pride in their faces was amazing. It truly is an honor."
Elena has always been involved in community service. She began volunteering in high school, and it is something that has continued at Curry.
"Every Wednesday during high school we had 'Hands to Work,' a community service project that we were required to do, and I truly enjoyed it. In my first semester at Curry, I went to the New England Veterans Homeless Shelter and helped out with soup kitchens. Almost every semester I've helped out by going to a retirement home where we interact with the elderly."
Around campus Elena is involved in different activities. She works with the Summer PAL program and talks to prospective students during Accepted Student Day, along with PAL (Program for Advancement of Learning) open houses. Elena is a member of the Student Ambassadors and has previously served as an Orientation Leader to the incoming first-year students.
Also through Curry, in the fall of 2014, Elena plans to enhance her real world public relations experience through an internship at the Children's Museum in Easton, Massachusetts.
"I love Curry, I think it is one of the best places," she exclaims. "I absolutely do not have any regrets coming here. Curry has helped me succeed and it's an amazing place."
