Creating Effective Library Assignments

Suggested guidelines for faculty to consider when creating assignments using library resources

  1. When creating an assignment, check with a librarian about the availability of resources.
  2. Unless you have evidence to the contrary, assume your student has limited research skills.
  3. Avoid having all students look for the same information (and resources) by assigning more than one topic.
  4. Make sure the assignment is clearly defined. Indicate acceptable sources and/or acceptable types of resources. Include format and length requirements.
  5. Send a copy of your syllabus and/or assignments to the library. This will help us to help your students when they come to us with questions.
  6. Request library instruction for your class in order to introduce students to the library resources. We can also create subject specific instruction for your classes.
  7. When assignments are completed, check back with the librarians for information on how students did with the assignment. Were they clear or confused?
