The evening classes were good. The classes were with working professionals, so work and life experience came into play in the curriculum.

RN-BS Students Host Health Promotion Fair

(Pictured above:RN Gail Gravel participated in Curry's Health Promotion Fair hosted by students in the RN-BS Program)

Curry College RN-BS Nursing students once again teamed up with Health Services to host a Student Health Promotion Fair on Wednesday, March 19 in the Student Center. The event was organized as part of the Community Health Nursing class and targeted special health needs of college students. Varied topics included birth control options, sexually transmitted diseases, rape and sexual assault, exercise and health, binge drinking, and sleep deprivation.

Professor Coleen Toronto initiated this educational opportunity in conjunction with Ellen Kawadler, Director of Health Services at Curry College in the fall of 2013. Professor Toronto's curriculum includes formulating a needs assessment based on secondary surveys from the Health Center, Public Safety and Healthy Campus 2020, a website produced by the American College Health Association (ACHA). Student presenters chose topics that aligned with the needs assessment and current, local news reports.

The benefits of the event were far-reaching for both the RN-BS student presenters and student fair goers alike.

"Many students expressed interest in inquiring about options after attending the fair," said Lorna Maiona, who presented on birth control.

Ellen Lanza, who presented on binge drinking, said that "I was impressed with the students' interest in our topics and the questions they asked."

Of her presentation on sleep deprivation, Gail Gravel reported that "Several students commented 'This is me!' ... I wanted to let them know they are not alone and that there are things that can be done to help get them through this busy time in their life, before it causes a lower GPA and health issues."
