Study Abroad FAQ's

Why should I study abroad?

Study abroad programs enable students to expand their knowledge while gaining insight into other cultures. Students who study abroad have opportunities to learn about themselves, practice their language skills, and gain a broader understanding of the world.

What requirements do I need to meet in order to study abroad?

Students who want to study abroad must have completed 30 credits at Curry College, be in good standing with student accounts, and have a minimum GPA of 2.70.

I think I want to study abroad. How should I proceed?

Students should meet with a Center for Career Development counselor to discuss their options and receive a Study Abroad Packet. Once the student has chosen a program they should obtain a program application - this can be done on-line or requested by phone. At the same time, the student should also complete the Curry College application for the Registrar's Office which is located in the study abroad packet. The completed program application and the Curry College application along with course descriptions must be submitted to the Registrar's Office at least one week prior to the program mailing deadline. The Registrar's Office will contact the student with the final decision on the application.

Will I be able to receive financial aid for my program?

Students who currently receive federal or state financial aid will be able to apply these funds to other colleges and universities. Any aid received directly from Curry College is not eligible to be used at any other institution. Students should fill out the Consortium Agreement in the study abroad packet and return it to the Financial Aid Office. Certain programs do offer separate financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Check with your program provider for further information on this.

Can I receive credit towards my major for courses I take abroad?

Courses taken abroad can be applied towards major or minor requirements, or can be applied towards elective credit. Students will need to obtain description of courses they wish to take abroad and have these courses approved by their department chair or coordinator.

Will my grades from study abroad be calculated into my Curry GPA?

No! The coursework is graded and transferred to Curry College for credit only. This does not impact a student's GPA. Transfer credit approval is subject to the transfer credit policy as stated in the Curry College catalogue.

When should I study abroad?

The most optimal time to go abroad is during junior year; however, it is possible to go as a senior, usually in the fall, or as a sophomore, usually in the spring. There is also opportunity to go abroad in the summer or during Intersession for those who would prefer to participate in a shorter program.

How much does it cost to study abroad?

Each program sets its own fees. Students make payment directly to the program and Curry does not charge a fee to students that are on study abroad. Programs can range in costs from $6,000.00 to $15,000.00 per semester, or less if it's a summer or intersession program. Costs vary depending on the program, location, duration, and what is included.

What countries can I go to?

The study abroad program allows students to self select the country where they study. The Center for Career Development Office helps facilitate this process by providing information on the various programs available as well as information for program providers. We've had students study in London, Italy, Australia, Spain, Africa, and Ireland just to name a few!

What student support services are offered?

Student support services vary from program to program. Be sure to check with the program provider or directly with the institute for verification of services. Please be aware that although programs may indicate that they provide support services it is probably not at the level that students are accustomed to receiving here at Curry.

Where will I live when I study abroad?

Housing for students on study abroad varies from program to program. Many programs offer housing at the host university while some programs make off campus apartments available. Other programs provide for students to live with a "host family" in order to experience the true culture of the country.

What if I want to study abroad during the summer?

There are several programs that are available during the summer, however, please be advised that these costs are separate from your regular academic year tuition costs.
