I looked at other schools with communication programs like Syracuse and Notre Dame, but after I visited Curry on Accepted Student Day, saw the radio station and met the folks who worked there, it was a no-brainer.

Are you interested in writing? Self-empowerment? Connecting thoughts and feelings with a way to express them? Exploring all areas of human existence? Film, books, or any form of expressive media? Then you may want to major in English.

The study of English allows one to explore many diverse areas combined into a single major. Where else can you study music, film, books, and pop culture simultaneously?

Studying English allows one to connect the past with what is current, both in terms of study and in terms of exploration. By exploring how people thought about current events in the past, we are able to learn more about ourselves.

Careers in English

With a degree in English your options are practically limitless. Regardless of the field you choose, Curry will prepare you to read critically and write at a high level of proficiency. Our graduates have gone on to become Hollywood entertainment lawyers, writers at ESPN and researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, to name a few. Many others have succeeded in an exciting variety of careers such as: journalists, business managers, teachers and professors, authors, bankers, social workers and entrepreneurs.

English as a MAJOR

Choose the major in English in order to explore, express, create and write. The English major will give you the tools to pursue a wide variety of career paths.

English as a MINOR

English CONCENTRATIONS

Curry's English program offers a range of concentrations that give you an opportunity to study a specific topic in depth.

English offers three possible concentrations within the major: One in traditional literature, one in American studies, and a third in women in literature.

The writing program offers three concentrations through the English area: creative writing, journalism, and professional writing.

The Curry Arts Journal

The Curry Arts Journal course is a three-credit practicum that will give you hands-on experience producing a literary arts journal. As a staff member of the Curry Arts Journal, you will have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of production including critiquing, editing, proofreading, design, layout, publicity, and events planning.
