Making a Difference
in People's Lives

College students on spring break typically conjures up images of palm trees and parties on the beach. Not so for a group of 13 Curry students this past semester. For the second year in a row, students, under the leadership of Curry's Director of Student Activities, Michael Randall, provided over 500 volunteer hours in and around Milton. The "Alternative Spring Break", developed to help promote social awareness, provides an opportunity for students to give something back to the local community. Projects included:

  • Sorting over 7,000 pounds of food at the Greater Boston Food Bank
  • Working with chidren at the Curry College Early Childcare Center
  • Greeting runners as they completed the MA Law Enforcement 5K and marathon
  • Spending time with Milton senior citizens at Unquity House, Fuller Village, and Winter Valley
  • Walking the animals and cleaning at the Milton Animal Shelter
  • Assisting at the Curry College Alumni Hockey Game and
  • Working with members of DOVE, a local domestic violence shelter, to organize an upcoming fundraising dinner
  • Record Setting Class of New Students

As yet another sign of Curry's growth in size and stature a record setting group of more than 600 new first year and transfer students arrived at Curry this fall. Together with the other returning students, enrollment this fall exceeds 1,600 traditional undergraduates with another 1,200 continuing education and graduate students at the main campus in Milton as well as at our other campuses in Plymouth and Worcester.

    We Remember
On Thursday, September 11, the Curry Community pulled together for a moment of reflection on Westhaver Park entitled "We Remember". Students shared their feelings and stories of September 11th, 2001 through speeches, poetry, and song. Words were shared by administration and students about the current status of our country, how we should cherish one another's company at every given opportunity, lend helping hands when needed and simply share love with those who matter to us. The event concluded with a moving rendition of America the Beautiful, sung by Heather Petitpas, a senior. This event was planned be the Student Government Association along with the Department of Student Life.*

    Intra-Campus
    Shuttle Begins
    Service

Curry established an intra-campus shuttle that welcomed both new students and those returning in Fall 2003 with routes connecting the North and South campuses. The College has contracted Cavalier Coach to provide students a shuttle service throughout campus on a continuous basis during the day Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. when the demand for on campus parking spaces is greatest.

The new shuttle allows quick, convenient access to all areas of the campus. North and South campuses are connected by a figure-eight loop route joined at the Drapkin Student Center. Beginning at Drapkin, the shuttle travels to stops at the Science Building/Academic Quadrangle, the Faculty Building/WMLN Radio Station, and Mayflower Residence Hall turn around and returns to Drapkin. It then proceeds to the Gazebo, Webb Learning Center (PAL Building), South Campus Residence Hall, the Gazebo, the front entrance gate, and back to Drapkin.
