CURRY'S HOMELAND
DEFENSE PROGRAM FEATURED
IN NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

The national spotlight has been shining on Curry College in recent weeks. Beginning with a feature story centering on Curry’s certificate program in Homeland Defense in the Chronicle of Higher Education last spring, Curry continues to receive national attention for this program in print publications such as the September 1, 2003 edition of Newsweek and on television August 30 with a live broadcast on MSNBC featuring Dr. Peter Hainer leads the Homeland Defense certificate program. Shifting to the literary scene, C-SPAN featured Curry College and its Blue Hills Writing Institute by broadcasting a one hour presentation by nationally known author, Dr. Danielle Ofri, who spoke of the challenges of patient care as experienced by practicing medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.

Guest Speaker, Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD,

The Blue Hills Writing Institute at Curry College proudly welcomed Danielle Ofri, M.D., Ph.D. as guest speaker during its 2nd annual summer program devoted to Life Writing in August 2003. Writer, editor, and practicing physician at Bellevue Hospital, Danielle Ofri is the author of Singular Intimacies: Becoming a Doctor at Bellevue, a collection of essays on medical training.

Dr. Ofri’s reading at Curry College was featured in a September Book TV broadcast on C-SPAN 2. Book TV broadcasts 48 hours of non-fiction book programming each weekend on C-SPAN 2, which, like C-SPAN, is a public service of the cable industry. Book TV programming includes book events related to history, biography, and business.

Participants in the 2003 Blue Hills Writing Institute spent a week with visiting professor and institute director Robert Atwan, noted writer, anthologist, and series editor of the Best American Essays, the highly acclaimed collection he founded in 1985. Wife Helene Atwan, director of the Beacon Press in Boston, conducted the writing institute’s editing and publishing panel.

An accomplished group of resident faculty - including published authors Sandy Kaye, Chair of the Curry College Department of Humanities, and Curry College Professor Alan Hunter – along with visiting professor Rebecca McClanahan, joined the Atwans in facilitating the exploration and expression of student’s stories.
