Citation of Honorary Degree presented to

William R. Keating, District Attorney, Norfolk County

William R. Keating, as the District Attorney for Norfolk County since 1998, your tenure has been marked by strong community outreach and numerous initiatives designed to improve and enhance the lives of all citizens, and especially those of young people, within your jurisdiction.

These creative efforts have first included innovative and progressive crime prevention programs; second, interdisciplinary forums such as the Norfolk Anti-Crime Council, which bring fresh perspectives and new research to such serious and diverse social problems as teen suicide, racial prejudice, internet crime, and drug abuse; and third, partnerships between the District Attorney’s Office and community leaders to implement strategies that reduce juvenile and domestic violence. One important example of the latter is your Norfolk Juvenile Unit, with strong links to school and police officials in all of Norfolk’s communities.

Deacon Joe Arsenault delivers the benediction.

Your commitment to the welfare of all citizens of the Commonwealth was born early in your career. Just three years after graduating in 1974 from Boston College with a B.A. in Political Science (later you earned an MBA from B.C. and a law degree from Suffolk University), you were elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. You served ably in the House through 1984, and then in the Senate from 1985 to 1998, where you held numerous leadership positions. Representative of the many awards and honors you received during your service in the Legislature were the Environmental Legislator of the Year Award, the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance Legislative Award, the Massachusetts Police Association Legislator of the Year, and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation Dan H. Fenn, Jr. Award for Political Leadership.

William Keating, in the laws that you have helped write and sponsor, and in your actions and vigorous leadership as District Attorney, your voice has been one of reason, insightfulness, and always an expressed concern for the most vulnerable and marginal members of society. In a world that sometimes seems confusing and ambiguous, these virtues - and the clarity of your voice - are now more important than ever.

On this glorious Commencement Day, it gives us at Curry a special pleasure to award you, a great friend of our College, the Doctor of Public Administration degree.

By action of Curry College, the Board of Trustees concurring, and by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Board of Regents of Higher Education of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Public Administration, honoris causa, and admit you to all the rights and privileges hereunto pertaining.
