Day One
Sunday, January 9
ROOM SERVICE, ANYONE?
Associate Professor of Communication and Director of Television Jerry Gibbs, his wife Susanne, and Curry students are met at their hotel by Good Morning America producer, Rachel Newlander. Talk about room service! Rachel, a grad school colleague of Gibbs, welcomed the class, talked about her work, and got them excited about the days ahead.
Day Two
Monday, January 10
HOW SWEET THE SOUND
A friend of Career Services Director Michelle Perrault helped arrange a look and listen inside Advantage Audio Burbank, which showed students how sounds and audio tracks are created for movies, TV, and animation, known in industry lingo as "sweetening the sound." The students saw how many different sounds were created and captured on tape to provide the sound effects for a rocket |
going off in a Disney production - one for flame, one for smoke, etc. They also learned about the position of Foley Artist, the person who creates sounds in special rooms for animation. The visit concluded with a viewing of the rows and rows of Emmys at the studio. The students were thrilled by the chance to actually hold one in their own hands.
WOLK WALKS THE WALK
Who could ask for a better guide for the group than Curry's own John Wolk '92, an executive at the ABC Television Network. When it comes to supporting Curry College and fellow alums, John Wolk always steps up and takes action.
On the second day of the trip, he brought the Curry students right in the control room of the Jimmy Kimmel Live show, the nerve center of the production. With a birds-eye view behind the scenes, students got a tutorial from Boston comicturned- director Bobcat Goldthwait. After the show, they met with some of the talent, music bookers, a writer and a couple of segment producers who shared their 'day in the life' stories and answered questions. |
In the audience at the Price is Right
Day Three
Tuesday, January 11
IS THE PRICE RIGHT FOR YOUR MIC?
Dressed in their best Curry College apparel, the group hoped that someone would get called up as a contestant on The Price is Right. While no one was asked to "come on down" during the game, Bob Barker mentioned the Curry group on air, Lindsey Brown got to dance on stage, and Sara MaJidy - who had admired Bob Barker and his microphone before the show - received an autographed stand-in blocking mic from the legendary host.
IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE PERFECT...
Back at ABC, John Wolk, '92 brought the group to the taping of Less Than Perfect starring Andy Dick. There was a lot to obser ve during the four hours of taping, and even more to learn when they were invited to join the stars, writers and producers for a Q&A session in the green room. "Don't give up on your dream," the students were told by countless members of the cast, graduates of both small and large colleges across the country. "We were all in your shoes once. You can do exactly the same thing if you give yourself a chance." |
