FALL 2004

SEPTEMBER
An exhibit of documents and images fro m Curry's archives was displayed at the Levin Library celebrating Curry's 125th year of Excellence in Education.

The President's Office and the Student Government Association sponsored the participation of Cur ry students, faculty and staff in the annual Marie Curry Walk-a-thon. This four-mile walk along the waterfront area of Quincy is held each year to raise money for research and awareness of breast cancer. This was the third year that members of the Curry community have participated as walkers to support this important cause.

The Van Someren Memorial Garden was dedicated in memory of friend and colleague, Curry College Magazine ImageDr. David Van Someren, former PAL professor and chair of the Excellence in Teaching Committee. Thanks to the many faculty, staff and friends whose donations funded the Courtyard project.


OCTOBER
Curry College Magazine ImageA Curry Connections fair was held in the Miller Gym. This fun and festive fall forum provided community connections for all students, from first-year to seniors. Academically, students had the opportunity to explore internship ideas, disc over a new course offering, learn about studying abroad, meet new professors, or make an alumni connection for career networking. Socially, participants had a chance to make new friends, have a picture done by a caricature artist, make a photo button, or win one of the great prize giveaways - a DVD player, Rockettes Christmas Show tickets, S.S. Plaza and Barnes & Noble gift certificates and Curry College gear.

In support of Domestic Violence month, Women's Studies students organized an informal, open mic event - "Our Voices." Participants shared stories, asked questions, and learned from others how to make their relationships and lives safe and free from violence.

Faculty and students were engaged in much dialogue leading up to the 2004 Presidential election.

The Diversity Committee sponsored a FREE SPEECH ZONE in the President's Dining Room as the elections approached. Anyone working for Kerry, Bush, or Nader who wanted to have a specific presence from their campaigns represented were given space and a forum to do so . The FREE SPEECH ZONE respected everyone's point of view and allowed the diversity of public opinion to have a forum at Curry.

The SGA and One Nation set up voter registration information tables in the Drapkin Student Center, encouraging students and friends to register and vote. Over 100 students registered on the first night! Many thanks to Janis Peters and Rory Forde who volunteered at voter registration tables.

Professors Jerry Gibbs and Larry Hartenian showed the documentary Outfoxed and facilitated a discussion about the role of the media in democracy after the movie.

Assistant Professor William Nancarrow facilitated a discussion on election issues attended by over 50 students in the PDR; fellow faculty participants included Professors Diane Goss and Larry Hartenian, Associate Professor Gabrielle Regney, and PAL Instructor Patty Kean.

Politics and History Professor John Hill facilitated a debate watch in the South Campus Residence Hall -a Patriot Ledger reporter attended and polled students' opinions about the candidates and election issues.

NOVEMBER
The Offices of Career Services and the Registrar sponsored a Study Abroad Fair. Representatives from AIFS, Semester at Sea, KEI and others helped spread the word about opportunities to explore the world. Students may study abroad for one semester or for one year at an officially approved site in Europe

or elsewhere and transfer earned academic credits back to Curry. Travel and learning the culture of another country are experiences that last a lifetime, and Curry can help achieve international dreams. Hip Hop at its best - Herman Banks and DJ Stikwitit, with special guest Illin P, were featured at the November Diversity Dinner in the Drapkin Student Center, serving food, music and conversation about the role of hip hop in politics and social justice.

Rob Davies, head coach of the Curry College Colonels men's hockey team, sponsored a skills clinic and "Skate with the Colonels" for Milton Youth Hockey (MYH) in November 2004. MYH Mites, Squirts, Pee Wees & Bantams got a tour of the Curry locker room and met the players who made the Elite 8 of Division III Hockey and wer e ranked 7th nationally under Coach Davies.

Thanks to Walter M. Katz '89 and the new athletic field, Curry College was able to serve as a host site for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Eastern Massachusetts high school football tournament used to determine state champions in each division. Three Super Bowls we replayed at Curry - Division III (Archbishop Williams vs. Westwood); Division II (Walpole vs. Mansfield); and Division IIA (Hingham vs. Bishop Feehan).

STUDENTS

Senior Matthew Bailey '05 of Riverside, CT received a Student Leader Award from the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) Northeast. The NACA Student Leader Awards were established to recognize the outstanding contributions of the region's undergraduate leaders who make a difference at their institutions. Matt serves as the Campus Activities Board president, a member of the Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Board, and president of the Ultimate Frisbee Club. He was nominated by his Campus Activities Executive Board and was one of five students in the northeast region to receive this award.

Junior Marisa del Pico '06 was the recipient of the Chemical Rubber Co. award, given to a science major with the highest grade in the Intro to Chemistry course.
