March

Yaniv Havusha

Nine Curry students and Assistant Director of Student Activities Claire Simonetti, drove 12 hours to rural Greene County, PA in March 2006 to spend their Spring Break week working with Habitat for Humanity.

This was certainly not a typical spring break vacation. Students slept in sleeping bags on the floor of a local church center, showered at a local college and prepared all their own meals. They even prepared dinner for the Mayor of Waynesburg and the local Habitat for Humanity coordinator.

Curry students worked on six houses, with tasks ranging from yard clean-up and painting, to laying gas and water lines. Each morning they met with local citizens who shared information about the community, including the coal-mining industry, local politics, the local college - Waynesburg College, and Habitat for Humanity's role in the county. Beyond their work in service, they were able to squeeze in time to tour local attractions and spend an evening in Pittsburg.

This trip was organized by the Office of Student Activities as part of the annual Alternative Spring Break program and Habitat for Humanity's "Collegiate Challenge" program.
