A WORD
from the President
Celebrating
champions is in the air as we mark this month’s
New England Patriots’ victory at the Super Bowl. It’s still
in the
air here at Curry from the fall when our very own Colonels’
Football Team secured the Division III New England Football
Conference (NEFC) Championship title, led by former New
England Patriot and Hall of Famer Steve Nelson, Curry’s Athletic
Director and Head Football Coach.
While the label “champion” is most frequently bestowed on
those who win first place in a competition, and rightfully so, a
champion can also be defined as one who has the attributes of a winner
or is an ardent defender or supporter of a cause or another person.
By those definitions, we at Curry College are surrounded by everyday
champions - championswho may not compete on a playing field or be nominated
for a particular prize or award, butnonetheless deserve our honor and
recognition. Look throughout the campus community and you will see them.
Faculty are champions in the classroom and beyond. They stimulate intellectual
thought
among our students and in the community at large. They champion the arts.
They take action
on curriculum initiatives. One such initiative has now been achieved with
the start of the
Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree Program in Nursing in January 2003.
Another initiative is on its way as the faculty recently voted to approve
a new Master of Business Administration Program. The College has submitted
a proposal to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education for review and
approval, and hopes to launch the program in Fall 2004.
Staff are champions who work tirelessly to continuously improve the
facilities and services
offered at the College. They support our students collectively and individually
each and every day.
Students are champions who take up many causes, giving of themselves
to help local organizations fight diseases and raise awareness of issues
like world hunger, and making their voices heard in the quest for world
peace.
Friends of Curry College are champions in the community, like Mr. James
P. McDonough,
Chairman and CEO of Abington Savings Bank, who provided a Charitable Foundation
gift of
$140,000 to establish a scholarship at Curry. Recently announced acquisitions
of Abington
Savings by Compass Bank/Seacoast Financial and Sovereign Bank connects
Abington Savings with another good friend of Curry College, John P. Hamill,
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Bank New England Division,
who received an honorary degree from Curry in 2001.
Trustees are champions whose philanthropic work and leadership gifts
encourage the ever increasing financial support of the College. Their
leadership impact is evidenced by Annual Fund contributions on the rise
from all community members and FY 2003 closing with $2.7 million recorded
in gift support for Curry College.
Alumni are champions who pursue their dreams and make their place in
the world, often
receiving accolades and awards for their work. Their passionate support
of Curry is witnessed as they volunteer their time and offer financial
gifts for the benefit of current and future students.
All of these champions are to be commended as they excel in their efforts
and help fuel the
growth of Curry College in size and stature as we continue to rise to
a place of prominence and great promise among New England’s finest
colleges.
