Dr. Lisa Ijiri and Dr. Pat Mytkowicz were invited to be keynote presenters at a conference in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico in November 2006 hosted by the Children's Foundation and the Learning Disabilities Association of Puerto Rico. They presented to an audience of over 200 educators, parents and professionals on the topic of "Strength-based Strategies and Effective Transition Planning for Students with Learning Disabilities and AD/HD." |
Throughout the school calendar year, Assistant Professor Patty Kean attends monthly Supervision Meetings run by Kaethe Weingarten, author of Common Shock: Witnessing Violence in Every Day Life. As an educational therapist, she meets regularly with this group of six women toexplore their clinical practices of working with individuals and small groups. Kaethe is currently researching and writing about the impact of hope, which is the theme of the group meetings.
Patty Kean also attended two conferences through the New England Educational Institute this summer. Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul, explored the use of symbolism, metaphor and archetypes in therapeutic conversations. The second conference, Child and Adolescent Psychopathology, focused on bringing hope to adolescents in trouble. Dr. Donald Meichenbaum presented an overview of The Nature and Development of Children with Oppositional Behaviors and Conduct Disorders; Cognitive-Behavioral and Systemic Interventions; Anxiety and Depressive Disorders; Assessment and Treatment of the Impact of Victimization; and the Application of Interventions with Adolescents and their Parents.
Fiona Mills has had a new book, "After the Pain: Critical Essays on Gayl Jones," published by Peter Lang. It is a collection of her own essays and those of her assistant editor Keith Mitchell.
Dr. Pat Mytkowicz presented four case studies exemplifying the challenges that face multilingual students with learning disabilities in the postsecondary environment at the National Conference of the Association of Educational Therapists held in Boston in October 2006. |
Associate Professor Laurie Alpert had her work exhibited at the Members Show at the Bromfield Gallery in Boston and the South End Open Studios in September 2006. Her work was also presented at the Hyde Park Open Studios in November 2006 as part of ESS Arts.
Senior Lecturer Dr. Abby Hafer presented a talk "Unintelligent Design — Five Easy-to-Understand Examples of How the Human Body is Poorly Made" at the Bedford Lyceum in September 2006.

In December 2006, Dr. Ijiri and Dr. Nancy Winbury presented a workshop in Atlanta, Georgia entitled, "Helping LD Students Navigate the College Search." The workshop was co-sponsored by Curry College's Office of Admission and organized by Associate Director of Admission, Keith Robichaud. The same workshop was also offered on campus in the Keith Auditorium in October 2006 and attracted a large appreciative crowd of over 120 guidance counselors, educational consultant and learning specialists.
Associate Professor Susan La Rocco was bestowed the Nurse of the Year Award at the American Assembly for Men in Nursing meeting in October 2006. Her ongoing work on the impact of men in Nursing along with her presentations on her doctoral research and on Walt Whitman have been well received. |
