  • Curry Bestows Honorary Degrees for Commencement 2009

Curry College is proud to announce that the honorary degree recipients for Commencement 2009 will be Joan Wallace-Benjamin and Melvin B. Drapkin.

Dr. Wallace-Benjamin is President & Chief Executive Officer of the Home for Little Wanders, Boston, MA. Dr. Benjamin has previously served as Chief of Staff to Governor Patrick, and served for 11 years as the President & Chief Executive Officer of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts. She currently serves as a Trustee of Wellesley College and a member of the Board of Overseers of the Heller School for Social Policy & Management at Brandeis University. Dr. Wallace- Benjamin will also serve as the Commencement speaker.

Melvin B. Drapkin is the Vice Chairman of the Curry College Board of Trustees. He has served two separate terms on the College Board, totaling many years. Mr. Drapkin's activities outside of Curry College include serving as the President of the Atlas Mortgage Corporation, and as a Trustee of the Atlas Foundation. The Atlas Foundation, one of two Drapkin Family Charitable Foundations, has had Curry College as one of its four primary beneficiaries for many years. The Foundation's support of other not for profits includes the Combined Jewish Philanthropies and Catholic Charities.

Congratulations to both recipients and we thank them for their service and support of our great College.

    Celebrating Drapkin Day

On Monday, May 4, Curry College celebrated "Drapkin Day". The event was coordinated by Student Activities and included give-aways of t-shirts and prizes. Also on display were some photos of Drapkin through the years. Continuing a long standing tradition, Dining Services sponsored the final Late Night Breakfast in the Drapkin Dining Hall at 10:00 P.M. that evening.

The Frieda and Joseph Drapkin Student Center was dedicated in the fall of 1971 and quickly become the student "hub" of the campus. In addition to student activities, the "original" Drapkin Center was home to a number of staff offices including Mail Services, which will be moving to the new Student Center, and Human Resources, which will be moving temporarily to 65 Atherton, and then to the lower level of 55 Atherton in August.

Allison Coutts, Director of Student Activities, was excited about being part of the planning for the event. "It is an opportunity to celebrate the building that has been such a large part of the College's history for the last 38 years".

Congratulations to Curry's "Salute to Nurses" Nominees

On May 3, 2009, The Boston Globe presented its seventh annual "Salute to Nurses" Honorary Section. The Salute to Nurses is a celebration of the nurses who go that extra mile or a nursing professor who has made an impact on a student's life.

Curry College is extremely proud of its six nominees: Sheryl Cifrino, Elizabeth Kudzma, Susan LaRocco, Maureen Murphy, Eileen O'Keefe, and Cathleen Santos.

Congratulations again to all the nominees - we are very proud of you and the work you do on behalf of Curry College!

Moving into the New Student Center

The walls are papered and painted, the lights and equipment are installed, the Curry Colonel is prominently displayed on the center of the gymnasium floor - the new Student Center is ready for its occupants! The departments who will call the Student Center their home began their move into this spectacular new facility the week of May 11.

Over the past few weeks, those working in the new Student Center have been feverishly preparing to meet the "move-in week" deadline. Walking through the building each day, the detailed finish work comes more and more alive. Each location in the building is designed and outfitted to enhance the experience of its intended use.

You can continue to watch the progress of construction on our website.
