Looking for an alternative
 way off campus?

My solution to the madness is simply the MBTA. For the four years I'vebeen at Curry, I have been using the MBTA system. I use it to get off campus to go shopping, work, or even a night out with my friends. It's so reliable, convenient and inexpensive. An all day pass cost $9.00 and you can basically use it all day as many times as you need to on any bus or subway line. From personal experience, I think it is so easy to walk down the street from Rose Hall on to Dana Avenue and catch the 24 bus to Mattapan. Once you are in Mattapan you can get anywhere in Boston. You can take the 31 bus to Forest Hills and go to Copley Center for some shopping or just go to Downtown Crossing to catch a movie. Or you can take the trolley to Ashmont and get to either Braintree or Cambridge. I can go on and on about how to get around Boston, let alone Massachusetts. The MBTA is great for getting around town and it runs all day. My suggestion is to definitely check out the website for more info on prices and bus/subway/commuter rail hours at www.mbta.com. By the way, for those of you who didn't know the commuter rail is basically transportation to the suburban parts of Massachusetts, places like Lowell, Haverhill, Framingham etc.

Thinking of missing class?  Think again.

Don't miss class unless absolutely necessary

To stay in good academic standing, the most effective thing you can do is to attend all classes.

Don't talk yourself into believing (or allow others to convince you) that missing a class now and then is OK.

Many instructors consider attendance and participation in determining final grades... so give yourself the edge.

Campus Safety
Curry College would like to express its deepest sympathy to the Northern Illinois University Community.  We are reminded of another tragedy that took place on a college campus. Curry College is committed to the best practice for providing a safe and secure campus. We have published our Curry College Emergency Management Guide that has been placed in every building on campus and can be downloaded on the Curry College Public Safety web site.  We are in the process of having sirens placed strategically on campus that would sound if we encountered an emergency situation.  But more importantly, have you signed up for Wide Area Rapid Notification (W.A.R.N.) yet?  This is a system that we utilize to notify the community if we encounter an emergency situation.  Within a matter of minutes this system will alert you via voice mail, email, text message, or a pager of an emergency situation on campus.  Again you cannot receive the message if you don't sign up.  Just logon to www.curry.edu and click on current students link and then on the W.A.R.N. register link.

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle

Chances are you have noticed that there is something missing on campus - recycling bins. What you may not know is that Curry College is recycling everyday, campus wide.
Curry College has a contract with E.L. Harvey & Sons of Westbourough, MA to handle all of the trash pick-up and recycling for the College, including recycling of construction debris. E.L. Harvey was selected because they are one of the few companies that will pick-up trash and bring it to their own transfer station where it is put on a conveyer belt to be hand-sorted into various categories of recyclable materials. With the amount of trash generated in just one day across campus, it is hard to imagine that task!

You will soon be able to get a peek into the process on Curry's Channel 8.
Jerry Gibbs is working with a group of students who will follow the trash pick-up from Curry to the transfer station to produce a television segment on the process. Watch your email for notification of an air date and time. E.L. Harvey's state-of-the-art construction and demolition debris recycling facility was also recently featured on PBS's This Old House.

If you missed the Town Meeting, sponsored by SGA, then you missed President Kenneth K. Quigley Jr. sharing with students Curry College's plans of expansion, growth and future. Students weren't shy when asking the president questions, and from inquiries regarding the aesthetics of the college to the rise of tuition costs, President Quigley never waivered in giving an answer. During the Town Meeting, President Quigley declared that Curry College could be summed up in four words; "good and getting better" and also said that Curry College is now one of the hottest, smallest colleges in New England."
Finding the Right Balance
One of the benefits of going to college is the potential those years have for enhancing personal growth.  Intellectual growth is of course, expected and even to some extent objectively measured through credits amasses and GPA obtained.  But the opportunities for social-emotional growth are at least equally abundant.  Independent decision-making, exposure to a diversity of cultures, value systems and personalities, deeper and more meaningful personal relationships, all contribute to personal growth.

As you choose your level of commitment to your studies and intellectual growth, you also have many choices which will affect your level of personal growth.  Perhaps the most important choices you will make are those involved with how much you will participate in the "whole college" experience.  It is difficult to argue with the adage that experience is the best teacher. The more you are involved in extracurricular activities and personal relationships, the more you will learn about yourself and about human nature. It is up to you to find the right balance.

Another truism is that we learn from mistakes and situations that frustrate us just as we learn from positive experiences. Here is where counseling services can be helpful.  When you get stuck, when you cannot find the reasons for failing, when you have difficulty finding the motivation to keep trying or when the failures seem to hurt too much, it may be time to get some help in analyzing the situation.  We all have limitations when it comes to seeing ourselves and our particular problems.  Helping to see things more clearly is the goal of counseling.

When we cannot see what is going wrong we cannot properly adjust our thinking or our actions.  Most get depressed if the same old problems keep reemerging. Often we withdraw when we get depressed, which is the opposite of providing opportunities for growth.  Don't despair if you are dissatisfied with the social-emotional aspects of your life.  Emotional pain is like physical pain.  It is a signal that something is wrong and needs to be corrected.  It is easy to make an appointment with a counselor.  Simply call the administrative assistant at extension 2182 or walk down to Smith House and we will try to arrange your first appointment within a few says.  Anyone who needs to be seen immediately will be allowed to see the first counselor who has a free hour.  To learn more about our services check us out on the Counseling Center  web site.  You can meet the staff and take the newly installed screening device which may help you in identifying your concerns.  However, please remember that you do not need a diagnosis or serious problem to make use of our services.
