Dr. Patricia Stephens joined the English Department as an Associate Professor in 2016. Her doctoral work at New York University (NYU) and her subsequent work as a faculty member at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University (LIU Brooklyn) focused on writing program and writing center administrative and professional practices. She brings twenty-plus years of experience as a teacher of writing and rhetoric, and has also taught courses in literature and Gender Studies.

Dr. Stephens served as Writing Center Director for fifteen years at LIU Brooklyn, where she increased programming for students across campus and implemented a broad range of staff development programs for tutors working with students on a range of reading and writing concerns. In 2006, Dr. Stephens was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to South Africa to support the development of new Academic Literacies Centres at University of South Africa (Unisa), and since her return, she has developed several new courses on South African literature and performance. Her current research is a book-length project that blends memoir, history and rhetorical analysis of the school desegregation process in her rural Northeast Texas hometown during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
