David Do, Class of 2018 - Nursing

Not all Nursing students have a lifelong calling to work in the medical field. David Do, Curry College Class of 2018, spent time in the military and started a family before showing interest in the profession. "I wanted to try something new after being in the Navy," said David. "So I jumped into Nursing, and I have come to love it."

Although he was also accepted at other schools, David chose Curry due to its relatively small class sizes that he felt offered a more personal experience than larger colleges.

"It was important that the Curry nursing classes were smaller, which was the most fundamental thing to me. I like the ability to have one-on-one time with my professors along with a sense of community. It plays a huge role in education and building of knowledge."

Since his second year at Curry, David has had clinical placements, where every day brings a new adventure. His days usually start between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. Typically he has a patient assignment, but he has also had the opportunity to observe in the Operating Room and critical care areas.

David truly enjoys his work at the hospitals - so far, he's been assigned to Westwood Lodge, Newton-Wellesley, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston and Milton) and Children's - where he says the on-the-job experience has helped build his skills to prepare him for a Nursing career after graduation.  He was also proud to be one of six students in the inaugural class of Jerald S. Savage Nursing Scholars, named for Curry's longtime former treasurer of the Board of Trustees.

"When I received the Savage scholarship this fall, I was so excited," said David. "I'm a dad of two children. The GI Bill doesn't pay for everything, so every little bit of money I get, it really helps me focus on school. It just makes the semester that much easier for me, and takes some stress off, so I can't thank the Savage family enough for that."
