When I'm on campus it reminds me of home because there are wooded areas all around. You can walk out of your residence hall and immediately enjoy a stroll on the walking paths through the forest. It's really nice to not have tall city buildings everywhere.

Student Center Chapel Named in Honor of James P. O'Toole

October 7, 2011

The Curry College chapel, a center for spiritual worship and meditation on campus, has a brand new name thanks to a generous gift provided to the institution by a family who believes in its mission.

On the afternoon of October 2, alumni parents Rick and Cathy Roche and their extended family joined President Kenneth K. Quigley, Jr. for a ceremony at the Student Center to officially dedicate the meeting space in honor of Cathy's late father, James P. O'Toole, who was described as a "hardworking, religious, family man." The gathering, hosted by the Office of Institutional Advancement, was held to kindly acknowledge the Roche's named gift, as naming opportunities and contributions make a significant positive impact in advancing the educational institution and its offerings to students.

Following a Mass said by Father Tony Luongo, President Quigley took a moment to extend his appreciation to the Roche and O'Toole Families for their philanthropic support of Curry College.

"The James P. O'Toole Chapel is and will continue to be a place that allows our students, staff and faculty an opportunity to pray and reflect in a space that allows for quiet contemplation.  Our goal at Curry is to produce well-rounded, thoughtful young women and men and the James P. O'Toole Chapel will be part of that," said President Quigley.

The chapel is located on the second floor of the College's recently constructed student center, and serves as a non-denominational space for students, faculty and staff to go to pray, reflect, meditate or celebrate their individual faith. The space is also be used to accommodate meetings of religious groups or clubs.

His Eminence Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley sent a video message to Curry College to express his gratitude for the Roche family and their legacy of charitable giving in the Boston area. He paid tribute to Rick's parents, Pat and Barbara, whom he said set a strong example for their son and grandchildren.

"I am very pleased to be able to join in extending my sincere gratitude to Rick and Cathy for this generous gift," said Cardinal O'Malley. He acknowledged the O'Toole chapel as a powerful  place "for the students, faculty and staff of the college to come to pray and reflect and gain a better understanding of how God is calling them to use their gifts for their own achievement and for the good of others," he said.

The Roche Family started a fond relationship with Curry College in 2006, when their daughter Caitlin Roche '10 enrolled as a freshman. Her cousin Kevin O'Toole '08, also a grandson of James O'Toole, was already matriculated at the time. While both alums were present for the dedication, Curry's Chief Development Officer Chris Lawson said that the biggest smile in the room came from Mrs. Peg O'Toole, as she watched her husband's name become associated with such an important room on campus.

"It is wonderful that Cathy and Rick expressed their gratitude for Caitlin and Kevin's experiences at Curry in such a meaningful way. Curry is proud of our friendship with the O'Toole and Roche families and we are grateful for their generous support. They are a tremendous example of how one family can positively impact an entire campus," said Lawson.
