August 28, 2017

In keeping with the annual tradition, faculty and staff lined the walkway to the Student Center, applauding the new first-years as they crossed Westhaver Park. Faculty members, adorned in traditional academic regalia, then joined the procession into Katz Gymnasium.

Curry College President Kenneth K. Quigley, Jr., welcomed the Class of 2021, urging students to get involved and stay involved, both in and out of the classroom.

"It will make all the difference," President Quigley said. "You will succeed more, you will contribute more, you will learn more, and you will have more fun."

Communication major Matthew Weddleton, Class of 2018, also advised the incoming students to make the most of their time at the College. He quoted business person Chris Gardner, as portrayed by Will Smith in the film The Pursuit of Happyness.

"Don't ever let someone tell you that you can't do something, not even me. You've got a dream, you've got to protect it. When people can't do something themselves, they're going to tell you that you can't do it. If you want something, go get it. Period."

Dr. Jennifer Ceven McNally, Associate Professor of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, urged students to look ahead four years and imagine who they want to be upon graduating from the College.

"You are the driver of your own success," Dr. McNally said. "Commit to this vision of yourself. Start now."

Amber Soucy '13, MSN Class of 2018, a registered nurse at Tufts Medical Center, gave the ceremony keynote address to the incoming class. She shared how Curry helped her reach her true potential, pushing her to excel academically and beyond as she became a dedicated and well-rounded professional.

"The faculty here provided support and wisdom when I needed it the most, and urged me to become a leader, advocate, and mentor," Amber said. "The Curry community has shaped me into the successful professional I am today, and there is no doubt in my mind it will do the same for you all."

Following the keynote speech, Curry College Provost Dr. David Szczerbacki officially matriculated the members of the Class of 2021, and Peter Newman, Class of 2018, led them in reciting the Class Oath.

The National Anthem and the Curry College Alma Mater were performed by students from a capella group Pure Vocals and choir group Sing!, under the direction of Dr. Julian Bryson, assistant professor of Fine and Applied Arts.
