I chose Curry because I really enjoyed the campus feel, I felt safe there. I also looked at the students and I saw me. I felt like I could relate to them. I felt comfortable and that was really important-just fitting in.

Curry College Baseball and Team IMPACT Hit a Homerun

March 29, 2012

The Curry College Athletic Department once again partnered with Team IMPACT to inspire another young athlete. Gavin McCarthy, 5, of Walpole was "drafted" by the Curry College men's baseball team on Friday, March 23. McCarthy was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis at the age of 3.

An enthusiastic athlete and fan, McCarthy plays baseball, soccer, basketball, and T-ball. Now that he is involved with Team IMPACT, a non-profit devoted to providing support for children affected by life-threatening illnesses through engagement with college sports teams, McCarthy can officially call himself a Curry College Colonel.

On a sunny afternoon, Gavin and his family were welcomed by the Curry College Baseball team to the field at the D. Forbes Will Athletic Complex. After meeting the team captains and coach, Gavin was presented with a uniform, baseball mitt and baseball decorated with his new team members' names. As the players finished up training, he practiced his throwing and catching with senior captain David Stevens. Before batting, Gavin joined the whole team for pizza and cake when they all bonded over their mutual love for baseball.

Curry College baseball coach Jay Schnabel and his team were very excited to meet their newest teammate. During the team's spring break in Winter Haven, Florida the players were talking and anticipating their upcoming practice with Gavin.

"I knew we had the right group of guys to do this and the effect Gavin has had on the team is profound. He's so full of life and his parents are so gracious. He's been with us for three days and he's part of the team already," said Schnabel. "Gavin is a Colonel for life, it doesn't end today."

Gavin went up to bat with the help of senior captain Matt Drew and the rest of the team where he proved what a valuable player he could be. His smile and enthusiasm were great rewards for the team.

"We don't realize how easily our lives can be affected by someone else," said Drew. "Gavin will really keep the team in good spirits."
