It's great that Curry has shuttles going into Boston so we could do things like go to Celtics and Bruins games throughout the season.

Hasbro Chooses Curry MBA Students to Play on Their Team

MBA Capstone Presentation December 2015

"The capstone report is a great
product that will help us take a
deeper dive into how we can boost
awareness of Scrabble during the
anniversary year ,"said Peter
Bognanno '14, Hasbro Gaming
Associate Brand Manager.

Developing a winning strategy can be serious fun.  Just ask Curry's MBA students who consulted on cost-effective promotion for the upcoming 70-year anniversary of Scrabble, a classic board game of words, from Hasbro Gaming.

For their fall 2015 capstone project, MBA cohort students conducted extensive research to inform how to increase revenues for a popular game the students say is as relevant today as it was when it was first introduced in 1948.

"We poured over pages of data and the history of Scrabble to arrive on a central theme - that players have a nostalgic connection that transcends time and connects generations," said project manager Dana Clarke.

Despite the generational appeal of Scrabble, challenges remain; only 50% of respondents would choose Scrabble over other board games, according to a survey administered by the MBA cohort. The survey results, which were derived from 335 people ranging in ages from 18 to 65, indicated that board games still play an important role in our device-driven world.

"The board game was cited as the primary gaming preference - by a long shot," explained student team leader and Capstone presenter Christopher Cheney. "The board game is a true medium for connection."

The MBA Cohort utilized their survey to validate that Hasbro is targeting an appropriate demographic group and to identify three new demographic group prospects. Specific tactics to reach these groups were outlined in their nearly 300-page manuscript detailing rationale and recommendations.

Additional data derived from online tools and analytics informed other key recommendations for continued success.  Website page content enhancements as well as an increased social media presence were top priorities for the team.

"The website is the foundation of a brand's 'digital personality' - and social media pages are a big piece of the puzzle to connect with audiences," said MBA student presenter Kyle Roderick.

The students prioritized recommendations and ideas for marketing campaigns by return on investment (ROI) while considering industry best practices such as monitoring results through key performance indicators.

Hasbro Gaming Associate Brand Manager Peter Bognanno '14, a former Curry MBA student, both identified with and lauded the team's tenacity.

"I commend the Curry College MBA students for being challengers - challenging us in the way we think about our brand," said Bognanno. "The capstone report is a great product that will help us take a deeper dive into how we can boost the awareness of Scrabble during the anniversary year - tremendous job!"
