Class of 2022 Encouraged to 'Dream Big' at Academic Convocation

On Monday, August 27, the College officially welcomed the Class of 2022 during New Student Academic Convocation. In keeping with College tradition, faculty and staff lined the walkway to the Student Center, applauding members of the Class of 2022 as they crossed Westhaver Park and processed into the ceremony.

Curry College President Kenneth K. Quigley, Jr., welcomed the Class of 2022, and spoke of the opportunities associated with a new academic year.

"We have great expectations for your success and your service and contributions to our College and its community," President Quigley said. "We look forward to seeing what you achieve." 

Communication major Alexandra Landry, Class of 2019, encouraged incoming students to make the most of their time at the College and to take advantage of the resources and opportunities the College offers. During her time at Curry, Landry has visited three countries on study abroad experiences, built homes for hurricane victims with Habitat for Humanity, and is a Communication Scholars and Honors student.   

"At Curry, I have done so many things I never imagined I'd be able to do. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and do something new," Landry said.

Dr. Silas Pearman, a professor and first-year coordinator of the General Education Program, spoke about the importance of intellectual and emotional wellness and told students to "seize the day." 

"Take a course you've never thought of taking," Dr. Pearman said. "Develop a love for the love of learning."

Josh Easler '00, vice president of promotion at Arista Nashville, delivered the keynote address. He shared how being involved in student clubs such as WMLN-FM and Curry Theatre helped differentiate himself in the job market. Easler also told students that while at Curry he was proactive in seeking internships and a part-time job in his field, and those decisions landed him a full-time radio job the day after he graduated from the College. 

"Your life is full of decisions, and what you do now will set you apart," remarked Easler. "Do the things other people aren't willing to do, and put in the work to succeed."

Following the keynote speech, Provost Dr. David Szczerbacki officially matriculated the members of the Class of 2022, and Catherine Chase, Class of 2019, led them in reciting the Class Oath. 

The National Anthem and the Curry College Alma Mater were performed by students from a capella group Pure Vocals and choir group Sing!, under the direction of Dr. Julian Bryson, assistant professor of Fine and Applied Arts.
