The connections you can make in Boston, as well as the opportunities in the surrounding areas here, are second to none in the media industry. Being at Curry, there are so many different ways to get your foot in the door early, at places like NESN, The Boston Globe and Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots and Revolution.

Communication Students Receive College Emmy Nomination for RED Camera Film

July 7, 2014

Curry's RED Camera film production, "Bitter Roast," received a college Emmy nomination from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Boston/New England Chapter.  The movie competed in the short fiction category.

"Bitter Roast" was produced, written and edited by Curry students in the film program's RED Camera 4K production class.   "Bitter Roast" is the story of an artistic young man who must overcome his limitations to impress a cynical hiring manager before his girlfriend tires of his immature behavior.

Students in Curry's unique RED Camera class have an opportunity to use the same Hollywood-level gear that they will find on the sets of elite film productions.  At Curry, the students are given a budget and they work with Boston area film rental companies to obtain the camera and lighting gear, the same procedure most independent filmmakers use to make movies.

"Running the RED Cam class has been an integral component of our 'small college - big opportunity' TV and Film production program," said Dr. Dorria DiManno, co-chair of the Communication Department and coordinator of the Film concentration. "When we run the RED Cam class, we're not just current - we're out in front of the competition."

Professor Todd Davis, the RED Camera course instructor, said "Bitter Roast" provided students all the trials and tribulations they'd encounter on a real Hollywood film set.  ""The success of 'Bitter Roast' was the result of the consistent effort and collaboration of the entire RED Camera class," Professor Davis said.  "We all worked hard to tell a meaningful story in a comical way.  Attention to narrative detail, a strong theme, and well-learned production skills resulted in a project that Curry can be proud of."

Over the years the RED Camera class has proven to be an eye-opener and a job opener for students and alums, with several students interning and working for the same rental houses where they originally rented the RED equipment.  Alums are now working in various aspects of the TV and Film industry around Boston, in New York City and out in Hollywood.

"Bitter Roast" has even given this group of students a listing on the influential IMDB movie database.

"The RED Camera Film Production course generated a true first look into the world of film production," said Matt Beren '13.  "It was a crash course in collaborating with professionals, pushing through tight deadlines, and gaining valuable connections through the creation of an independent film."

Now that they have a college Emmy nomination under their belt, the sky's the limit for what students in the next RED Camera class will do.  We'll all find out when it ramps up again in the Spring, 2015 semester!
